If ya ain't breakin it....ya ain't playin it

About Me

Grew up in Kentucky. Fell in love with Southern Rock, Country, Bluegrass, Heavy Metal, and Hair Bands while growing up. Upon entering college, I quickly realized that I couldn’t major in any of those musics. Therefore, I fell in love with Classical music. I received the Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from Western Kentucky University. Shortly thereafter, I received a Master’s degree in classical percussion performance from the University of Illinois. While studying at the U of I, I took notice of the incredible jazz program that was beginning to gain recognition. I decided to remain at the U of I to complete my Doctorate in jazz studies. I’m currently working on completing that degree.

Though my diplomas state otherwise...I consider myself a student of every possible music. I certainly do not think of myself as merely an "orchestral percussionist" or a "jazz drummer." I find it to be a tragedy that so many "purists" in any given genre of music relegate themelves to "golden rules."

My ultimate goal is to make a living playing music. I feel that this is what I have to offer society.

Check out this video of me playing drumset with the University of Illinois Latin Jazz Ensemble at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in Toronto, Canada.

This is one of my favorite videos on YouTube right now. The drummer (Kenny Washington) is a constant source of inspiration to me. I was lucky enough to take a lesson with him a few months ago. It was an eye opening experience. Enjoy!!

Brian Blade is one of my favorite drummers right now. This is a killer video of his Fellowship band.

Stevie Ray Vaughan is another constant source of inspiration in my life. His music has literally changed my life. Settle in and get comfortable for this one. Hold on tight at about 3:43.
