About Me

Been lots of places, done lots of things, had several different careers.I love Jesus, my wife Rachel, Shane & Karla, Ryan & Dee, my dog Gus, playing good country music with nice people, and getting through the challenges every day brings. Currently we're celebrating the arrival of my first grandchild, Sophy(born on Willie's birthday). My life has dragged me through valleys, over mountains, around curves, across oceans; exposed me to peace and chaos, danger and security, love and scorn, admiration and hate; I've been praised and condemned, lied about and related to. My life is constantly in a state of flux -- I've spent time both at the summit and in the valley -- but I'm used to it.Through it all, I've learned to take life as it comes; rely on my sense of humor, appreciation of irony & hard-earned patience to help me play the hand I was dealt; appreciate people for who they are; how to love folks and accept their love in return.

My Interests

Playing pedal steel guitar, dobro, and mandolin. I enjoy playing gigs in those big ol' Texas dance halls, jam sessions at Luckenbach, writing songs, country music history, stuff like that. My latest and most important interest is my new grandbaby.

I'd like to meet:

I'm always meeting interesting people and always ready to meet more. I like to make new friends; one can never have too many.I'd like to meet more of the friends I've made online.

Music:

Traditional country is what I grew up with and usually get hired to play. My first love is hardcore country music, the old classic stuff -- guys in rhinestone suits who knew firsthand about busted hearts and alcohol abuse. I also love Western Swing, some bluegrass, old-time blues, big band music...I love Bob Wills, the Beatles, Charlie Daniels, Tommy Dorsey, Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, and many, many more.My favorite spiritual music styles are Bluegrass gospel and the old-style gospel quartets with all that rich harmony.

Movies:

Anything with Robert Duvall or John Wayne in it; 40's westerns, 50's sci-fi (the cheesier the better).I've lost count how many times I've seen "Lonesome Dove" & "Tombstone", and it's starting to get that way with "The Alamo" (the Billy Bob Thornton version).

Television:

History, Discovery, & SciFi Channels

Books:

Anything by Larry McMurtry, Louis L'Amour, Tom Clancy. History, especially about my wonderful home state of Texas and Alamo history in particular. I'm also interested in the history of the former nation of Catalonia, now a state in Spain.

Heroes:

Roy Rogers, Buck Owens, guys like that. Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day, Weldon Myrick, Herb Steiner, Paul Franklin, Jeff Newman, the classic steelers and the newer ones; it's a brotherhood I'm very proud to be a part of.Every individual has something to offer or teach the rest of us, if we'll just watch and listen. Those individuals we learn from are heroes in their own way.The people I consider true heroes are mostly real people the rest of the world has never heard of. Heroes come in all shapes, sizes, ages, nationalities; they often seem to appear out of nowhere, do what's needed, and disappear back to their normal lives. Another term I use for these heroes is "angel".
