About Me

I've been involved with independent music for many years now.
After co-running the (now dormant for the time being) drum and bass labels Streetbeats, NOIR and Pi, I've been concentrating on hip hop production and engineering and running the UKHH label, Pepa Records, along with founder, DJ Juice, though I write all sorts of music other than hip hop.
Check out the label website at www.peparecords.com
As well as co-running Pepa, I run Subversion Studios, a small, flexible facility near Reading UK, available for vocal recording, mixing and mastering.
A new website for the studios is in development and will be online soon at www.subvertbeats.com
I also run the internet music, politics and science forum Subvert Central
Since this isnt just a space to whore my wares, here are a few things about myself.....
- I just turned 30
- I love all sorts of good music, and am always looking for new sounds that move me; you'd probably be surprised....
- My favourite directors include the Coen Brothers, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, Ken Loach, though I enjoy certain stupid comedies just as much as deeper thought provokers.
- I think Curb Your Enthusiasm is one of the most genius things to appear on television in years
- I think that Ripping Yarns is known by far too few people
- The one place I want to go to is Maccu Picchu
- I play chess almost every day
- I love Liverpool FC with a passion...

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: peparecords.com
Band Members: Ben Subvert
Influences: Everything and anything that stimulates my ears from Coltrane to Shellac, from Necro to Fugazi, from Hijack to Photek, from Squarepusher to Rachels, from Led Zep to Nina Simone, from Radiohead to Juan Atkins. I love most of the golden era sub pop bands, Mudhoney, Tad, Nirvana etc...

Respect to anyone in history who has put their own neck on the line to speak out against oppression and injustice. From Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to Aung San Suu Kyi, from Cesar Chavez to Medgar Wiley Evers, from Rosa Parks to Martin Luther King.

On a more light hearted note and in a more contempory setting, William Shatner, Ray Winstone, DeNiro, and finally anyone in music remaining truly independent and keeping their feet on the ground.

The Mighty Boosh, Catterick, anything Chris Morris related, Alan Partridge, Phoenix Nights, Curb, Ripping Yarns, Scrubs, Arrested Development etc. These are the sort of comedies that make me laugh...
