You can pretty much see my life in photos at flickr.com/photos/jessfry. Not so secret obsessions: politics with a small p, gofugyourself.com, One Day At A Time, books, music, more books, and more music, national lawyers guild, movie night with Aurora, FAT RALPH, fiestas, fiestitas, y fiestititas, fireworks, micheladas, tequila, and meeting friends at los portales to dar la vuelta.
Beatniks, freakniks, refuseniks, and cheap tricks.
I believe that it's okay to listen to pop if it's not in English. I've come to learn that just because it's popular doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. I love 70's psychadelic music, old blues, jazz ma tazz, kitschy electronica, happy songs, sad songs, watch your shoes songs, and even slit your wrist songs. I hate the reggaeton, and wish that it would butt it's ugly oversized snout out of latin music. I love all things Velvet Underground, Nico, Willie Nelson, Donovan, Elf Power, Cat Power, Regina Spektor, la verbena popular. Julieta Venega, Prince, Quintron, Sebadoh, the Rolling Stones, Iron and Wine, the Decemberists, the Postal Service, Spoon, Jeremy from Boise, Monster Dudes, T. Paul, the B Vocabulary, Porter, Zoe, Caifanes, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Elton John (but only Madman Across the Water), Belle and Sebastian, Blonde Redhead, Bonnie Prince Billy/Palace/Will OldhamWillOldhamWillOldham, Daniel Johnston, Milemarker, Dinosaur Jr., Erik Sanko, Neutral Milk Hotel, Jawbreaker, John Prine, Johnny Thunders, Michael Hurley, Pinback, Treepeople, Built to Spill, the Who, Karen Dalton, Lila Downs, ARMANDO PALOMAS, Love, Babasonicos, The Arcade Fire, and Van Morrison. Did I mention Neil Young? Oh yeah, him too. And I have a guilty pleasure called Bright Eyes. I see you judging me. Godwana, Manu Chao, los amigos invisables, Shakira, many, many others.
The GOONIES is probably my favorite ever. I also really like the Weather Underground, Five Easy Pieces, the Battle of Algiers, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Amelie, Paper Moon, Easy Rider, and many, many more. Just saw Fuera del Cielo which was depressing and wonderful.
I really like television...especially Sony Entertainment Television. All the english language drama your heart could desire.
Middlesex, The Color Purple, the Bell Jar, Trout Fishing in America, Anything by Dorothy Parker or F. Scott Fitzgerald or Nadine Gordimer. I've read Catcher in the Rye and Jane Eyre both about 18 times, though I consider neither favorites. They're just books that I always read when I'm "going through something." Kavalier and Klay, Notes from the Underground, the Poisonwood Bible, Of Love and Other Demons, Eva Luna, the Stories of Eva Luna, GEEK LOVE, Fast Food Nation, Oranges are Not the Only Fruit, Under the Banner of Heaven, The Kiterunner. Lately, I've been reading the Lemony Snickett series in Spanish - I find that literature aimed at pre-teens in Spanish is just at my reading level.
Clara Barton, Emma Goldman, Lucy Parsons, Mother Jones, the Bandit Queen, my mom.
