I don't know why, I don't know why...

About Me

I'm a early-30s college-returnee who just graduated in January 2008. I started out as a computer science major, and then realized I wasn't really interested in a career in computers anymore. I've been working with computers in one form or another since I was about seven years old (Commodore 64 baby!), and decided it was time for a change.

So I am majored in Japanese instead. I've been studying for about three and a half years. I can say most anything I want by now, but I sometimes have difficulty understanding responses. Further, things like reading a regular book or watching a TV show with comprehension are still well out of range. I don't think those kinds of things are possible for me until I spend some serious time in Japan and get immersed in the language as it's actually spoken. Starting around August, I am expecting to move there for a few years to help teach English and, in the process, get a strong grasp of the language.

My Interests

Japanese culture, video games, dancing, listening to music, going to concerts, Chupathingie, studying, procrastinating, dining out with friends, watching random comedy videos with friends, well, really, friends make everything better.

I'd like to meet:

I'd really like to meet your mom.

Music:

Sharan Q, Perfume, Aerosmith, Fujii Takashi, D'espairsRay, Project Pitchfork, Yaida Hitomi, Def Leppard, Yaen, Kenny Rogers, Ice T, Pet Shop Boys, Shakka Zombie, Neil Diamond, Duran Duran, The Pink Panda, Billy Joel, Morning Musume, VNV Nation, Rip Slyme, Tears for Fears, In Strict Confidence, Penicillin, Melon Kinenbi, Prince, Madonna, Utada Hikaru, Warren G, Lightning Seeds, Gordon Lightfoot, Move, Assemblage 23, Mucc, New Order, and most everything inbetween. No particular order.

Movies:

Spaceballs, Lost in Translation, uhhh, I'm not much of a movie person. But I make up for it by assuming that when I don't get a movie reference, it was part of "Snow Dogs".

I've kinda lost my interest in anime as well, which is what started my overall interest in learning Japanese, however, there are a handful that I think are pretty top-notch in terms of maintaining an interesting plot or just being plain funny...

Samurai Champloo, Tenjou Tenge, Mahoromatic, Real Bout High School, Rurouni Kenshin, Someday's Dreamers, Vampire Princess Miyu, Ranma 1/2, Record of Lodoss War, Noir

Television:

I have a television. I do not, however, have television service of any variety, nor do I even have an antenna. But my friend Anatol lets me watch Metalocalypse, and I have a huge affinity for South Park. Then there's a handful of Japanese TV shows I enjoy, such as Utaban and Matthew's Best Hit TV.

Books:

Dance, Dance, Dance by Murakami Haruki. It's the only book I've read outside of school in recent history... but I'd like to get into reading again after I've graduated.

Heroes:

My father for (so far) winning a second bout with alcoholism.

My grandmother for being determined enough to learn how to use computers despite her old age and slowly deteriorating health.

My mother for overcoming an overwhelming sense of helplessness for a long period in her life.

Anybody who knows at least one thing they really want in life, and tries their hardest to attain it. Actually attaining it is merely bonus points for their benefit.
