Founded in 2005, the San Francisco-based, full-service independent record label SMC Recordings has quickly risend to the top echelon in sales and acclaim of urban and hip-hop record companies nationwide, and is also a rising star as an emergent next generation indie label regardless of genre. SMC originally grew out of a vision that San Francisco Ralph Tashjian has in the early 00's to launch a new kind of record label, one based in his hometown, that would be about alternative music in the truest sense of the word. He knew the opportunity existed to build from the ground up an imaginative company that could fill the space between the corporate monoliths the majors were becoming and the D.I.Y. outfits that many artists were resorting to. When Tashjian crossed paths with Will Bronson, SMC came one step closer to being realized. An ambitious Bay Area-bred music fan and aficionado, Bronson was covering Northern California's colorful hip-hop scene for a fledgling urban music magazine called Showcase at the time.Tashjian saw in him the potential for an inspired partner with an eye for talent. His instincts were right-the first release brought in and shepherded by Bronson was Ya' Boy's first cousins, Bay Area hip-hop stalwarts San Quinn and Messy Marv are no SMC Recording artists. The subsequent recruitment of Tashjian's fellow industry icon George Nauful to steer the company's business affairs and financial sectors completed the foundation. While Bay Area hip-hop and its sub-set "hyphy"-regarded as Northern California's counterpart to "crunk"-is the core of SMC repertoire, they also work with related genres and acts building a buzz in other markets across the country.
