In 1996 Melanie became one fifth of the world’s biggest girl group, the Spice Girls. They achieved nine number 1 singles in the UK and sold over 40 million albums worldwide.
In 1999 Melanie released her first solo album Northern Star which had been recorded in Los Angeles. The album entered the chart at number 10 and later peaked at number 4. Thanks to some great promotion which included Touring & Live Performances the album produced 5 hit singles, 2 of which, Never Be The Same Again & I Turn To You went to number 1 in the UK. According to 'Spice Girls Discography' Northern Star went on to sell around 884,000 copies in the UK, and around three million copies worldwide making it the most successful solo Spice album to date.
In 2003 Melanie released her 2nd album Reason. Here It Comes Again was the 1st single to be released followed by On The Horizon and a double a-side Melt/Yeh Yeh Yeh. Reason went to number 5 in the UK and achieved gold certification. Melanie carried on touring and her live performances were attracting more and more fans. Melanie appeared in the Channel 4 show The Games where she broke her leg, this led to a long and painful healing process for Melanie. It also meant the planned double a-side for Melt/Yeh Yeh Yeh was put on hold, when the single was released the limited ability to promote the single had a dramatic affect on it's performance. Melanie soon parted ways with Virgin Records.
With a new sense of freedom Melanie invested a lot of the money she'd earned in creating her own record label, Red Girl Records was set up in early 2004.
The first album to be released on the new label was Melanie's 3rd solo album Beautiful Intentions. Fans were treated to a preview of the songs on a mini Barfly tour Melanie did in Summer 2004. The first single from Beautiful Intentions was Next Best Superstar. It scored a top ten hit for Melanie at the start of 2005 and second single Better Alone was released as a download and through the official online shop.
In late 2005, Melanie was asked to record the theme tune to German soap opera Julia. The track, written by Guy Chambers and Enrique Iglesias called First Day Of My Life, was then released in Germany where it topped the charts and was certified platinum after selling a massive 400,000 copies. But its success didn’t stop there, going on to be number 1 in Spain, Portugal and Austria, it became one of the biggest hits of the year. The huge success of the single reflected on album sales as ‘Beautiful Intentions’ became certified gold in Germany and platinum in Portugal, where it stayed at number 1 for nine weeks.
Melanie is now on Album number 4 and is the first Spice Girl to have released 4 albums. The new album is entitled This Time and is out now! The first single in the UK I Want Candy is the soundtrack to a new British movie of the same name and were released in March 2007. Melanie is also releasing new single's in Europe, starting in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The single is called The Moment You Believe and is the theme tune to a German soap opera.
Melanie's second UK release from This Time was entitled Carolyna and was followed by the title track "This Time"
In June 2007 The Spice Girls announced they were getting back together for a reunion tour, a Greatest Hits Album and official documentry. It was later announced the girls would also release the official Children In Need single for 2007. The girls first show in London sold out in 38 seconds. The tour became a phenomenal success as people couldn't get enough. The girls did 47 shows in the UK, Europe, USA and Canada before calling it a day in February 2008.
Melanie is about to do a solo tour in Canada with some dates in Europe too. Lets hope this is just the beginning for our shining star.
