I'm nothing but a lean, intensely charming Belgian

About Me

I was born in Kansas, spent my formative years in Michigan, and last set foot on US soil in Oklahoma. I'm currently living in South Korea, teaching English.
There are some kids who are absolutely petrified that I'll call on them, or that they'll receive any attention at all. There are others who won't get off the tables. Seriously, sitting on the desk quickly becomes an acceptable alternative instead of a never-thought of possibility. There's also the kids who won't put their cell phones away for longer than 6 seconds. I tell them in English, Korean..I'm thinking of trying Chinese..but it doesn't work.
Yet, there's the overwhelming majority who are incredible students, compliment me when I've been to the gym of late, are extremely affectionate and outgoing and fun to be around. All in all, it's an excellent time, and an incredible experience.
I also know this joke wherein a Swiss rooster is condemned to death for laying an egg. It's the funniest joke I know.
It's pretty funny.

My Interests

I'm interested in that shady old man who sits at the far end of the bar, as far from the weather as possible.

I'd like to meet:

Anyone who can explain this.

Music:

My favorite artists would be Pavement, The Starlight Mints, Cake, Eels and Sufjan Stevens.

Movies:

Donnie Darko.
It's cool, it's hip, it's trendy....but it's also just a very complicated way (which is maybe the only way possible) of talking about the full spectrum of what life is, and what it is worth, and people's beliefs and motivating factors, and the sacrifices they will make for those beliefs and motivating factors. It's also really funny when they talk about Smurf reproduction, though.

Television:

Arrested Development, Heroes, The Office, Dexter, Acceptable TV and The Wire.
Here's The Wire, explaining how the world works:
Acceptable TV is the greatest skit show, perhaps ever: Sound Effector - Acceptable TV

Books:

"She called it an armoire, which was the problem, which was why he had dragged it onto the beach behind the house, and surveyed its progress over the course of a week, the elements driving down their varieties upon her armoire, their drama of erosion upon her armoire, a winter of steady rain, and had she been willing to call the armoire a chest of drawers like anybody else maybe they never would have arrived at this moment, or maybe he would never have arrived at this moment, he would not have found himself on the deck, in the rain, overlooking the beach, overlooking the armoire buried in sand up to the bottommost drawer (the work of tides), strands of kelp like accessories arranged around it, gray driftwood, lobster buoys, a Clorox bottle, a red plastic shovel, the pink detached arm of a chubby doll, plovers piping there, alone on the wet deck with a stiff drink despite the newness of the day, with a Sears deluxe crowbar with lifetime warranty he intended to use on the armoire, if you want to know the God damned truth." -Rick Moody, Demonology (Currently Reading)
My favorite authors are Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Milan Kundera, Tony Vigorito, John Howard Yoder and William Gaddis

Heroes:

Gonzo the Great.Dude was amazing.

The Stage Names

All night. All night I have been listening to "The Stage Names" by Okkervil River. I don't remember being this caught up in a CD since The Arcade Fire's first one. It's flat out amazing, in every way....

Props to Jen

This is mad props to The Hee-Hee. I listened to 30 minutes of country music while waiting for them to bring me the featured attractions, and, somehow, don't regret it. It's great that you got t...

I Had Become Americas Delightful Exotic Doll

A character in the story, "Ineluctable Modality of the Virginal" by Rick Moody just reminded me a lot of myself - so, since I needed something to post about anyway, I'll do that. I owe a lot...

How Could Infinitely Many Paths Lie in a Finite Space?

Today in class, I made a mistake. I attempted to demonstrate the many variations of the question word "how", and was in turn showing off my Korean, to give comparable examples of how many different ko...

A Tabletop Labratory Experiment

From deep within the bowels of my computer, an ugly thing hath made an appearance. It's nothing I'm proud of, and yet - it's nothing I shut off either. That's right - nay 30 minutes...

Turned Out I Didn't Have the Patience for All That...

Today, my boss came up, patted my belly, and, in that special "I can get away with being abhoreously rude because..this isn't my native language" way, said - "So, you haven't been running la...

A quick thought, inspired by Lamb, which was authored by Christopher Moore..a mostly comic novelist with occasional deep thoughts! Most of this is directly from the book, I gather the thoughts&nb...

As if I were a Dog...

I split this up. I do what I do - you sing songs of praise. Together, we then do what we do. So..I'm not gonna rationalize this. ANECDOTAL KAPOW! 2: An old man came up to me at McDonalds. I was with H...

So, I'm back in Korea. How about that? Year 2, if it goes as quickly and entertainingly as Year 1 - will be a success.   Anecdotal KAPOW!: I'd like to give a big sarcastic thank you to Linkin Pa...

The camel passing through the eye of the needle..

So, oh yeah, my birthday was this weekend. In celebration, my computer died. Well, it didn't really die - just the back-light. If I took a flash-light to it, I could still see everything. This was f...
