I've always wanted to be a Rocket Boy. Homer Hickam knew what he wanted, and he went for it. As a 7th grader watching October Sky for the first time in class, I immediately found an intimate connection to this character: his drive, his dreams, and his relationship with his father. I read the novel a few years ago when I started making music. Homer's struggles and in the end his successes inspired me. In this 368-page paperback I found a character I could relate to more than anyone I've ever met in my life, and I think it's cool that the 12-year-old boy who picked up his father's guitar for the first time could find comfort in another boy reaching for the same things.
I'm 17 now. I put out an EP last fall called Elevator Music, and the hard work paid off. Though I'm still the background music playing at your local coffeehouse, I'm watching things happen. The world has a lot to offer, and I'm aware of that. I'm meeting people, laying my cards out (launching rockets), and having the time of my life. I'm a Rocket Boy in my own mind, and I couldn't ask for anything more.
