"No form of art goes beyond ordinary consciousness as film does, straight to our emotions, deep into the twilight of the soul." ~ Ingrid Bergman ~
"Television is a new, hard test of our wisdom. If we succeed in mastering the new medium it will enrich us. But it can also put our minds to sleep. We must not forget that in the past the inability to transport immediate experience and to convey it to others made the use of language necessary and thus compelled the human mind to develop concepts. For in order to describe things, one must draw the general from the specific; one must select, compare, think. When communication can be achieved by pointing with the finger, however, the mouth grows silent, the writing hand stops, and the mind shrinks." ~ Arnheim ~
As the pages of a book are turned, one's world is broadened. Literature is valuable for many reasons: it sparks our creativity and imagination; it introduces us to new people, places, and ideas; it builds our vocabulary and strengthens our use of language; and it clarifies difficult situations and troublesome feelings. In short, books help us reach out to the world; beyond home and community and aid us in visualizing an ever-expanding array of possibilities. The human mind should be nourished as often as possible for it has an infinite appetite.
