If you saw an ad like this in the newspaper from your local animal shelter, what kind of dog would you guess it was for? A Labrador Retriever? A Beagle? Believe it or not, this is a description of a Pit Bull! Sadly, due to current media hype and the resulting stereotypes and misconceptions held by the public, these are not the characteristics that we tend to associate with Pit Bulls.
Pit Bull is a generic term for many Bulldog and Terrier crosses including: The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), The American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff), the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and for some, the American Bulldog and the Bull Terrier (Pit Bull Rescue Central, 2003). Although originally bred for bull baiting and dog fighting (which has long been outlawed) when these dogs are produced by responsible breeders they are bred for good temperament. Many dogs of these breeds are therapy dogs; they also do quite well in obedience (canismajor.com). Staffordshire Bull Terriers are often referred to as "nanny dogs" because they are excellent with children. Unfortunately, because Pit Bulls convey a tough, macho image in our society, they are all too often purchased by the wrong people, who use harsh discipline and even outright abuse to produce a dog that is intimidating to others. Ironically, Pit Bulls are not well-suited to perform the task of protecting someone's home or property, as they are typically just too friendly with people to be good guard dogs.
Pit Bulls are not the dog for everyone; their strength necessitates early and consistent training and their origins mean that some may still exhibit varying degrees of dog aggression- this is not to be confused with people aggression! Pit Bulls have consistently proven to be remarkably good-natured, despite their unfortunate origins:
The American Temperament Test Society provides temperament testing around the country for dog breeds, and gives a passing score for the entire breed based on the percentage of passed over failed within total number of the particular breed tested. As of December 2002, the American Pit Bull Terrier has a current passing rate of 83.2%, and the American Staffordshire Terrier passes at 82.6%. In comparison, The Golden Retriever's passing rate is 82.5% (PBRC, 2003).
The Pit Bull breeds are wonderful dogs that deserve our love and respect.
I'd have to say my cousin, Justin M. Anderson. He always lived life to the fullest!!! His life was cut short due to a HORRIBLE motorcycle/vehicle accident on June 28, 2003, only 6 days after his 21st birthday.He loved Motocross and street bikes. You could always find him on the track practicing for a race or doing stunts on his R1 in front of his house. Always and Forever Full Throttle, Team Green 95!!!!!
