Dr. Elsa Schneider is a beautiful Austrian scholar who works with Walter Donovan to find the hidden location of the Holy Grail. She also works closely with Henry Jones Sr., the leader of the mission, and by his account becomes romantically involved with him as well as with Indy during their time together.In reality Elsa is a Nazi spy, working with Donovan (who also collaborates with Hitler) to gain the Grail for the Reich. She steals Henry Jones's Grail diary and returns to Berlin with it, but Indy takes the diary back from her before she can turn it over to the Furher. It is during this moment that Elsa reveals to Jones that she has no love for the Nazi party and is merely trying to find the Grail for her own reasons.Indy encounters Elsa once again inside the Grail chamber where she uses her knowledge of history to try and solve the Grail riddles. When asked by Walter Donovan to choose the correct Grail from a selection of chalices, Elsa chooses the wrong cup on purpose so that Donovan will be eliminated.After the correct Grail chalice has been identified, the temple begins to shake apart and the relic is separated from her. Hanging from a cliff ledge, Elsa is tempted to reach down to grab the artifact dangling from a ledge, refusing Indy's pleas to reach back up to safety. Instead of rescuing the Grail her hand slips from Indy's and she plummets down into the darkness and death.
