Metal act Sight Unscene has recently teamed up with A&R Select, the premier A&R firm based out of Los Angeles, CA. Since its release, Sight Unscene’s “Devils in the Details†album has been wooing the ears of headbangers with its blistering but melodic brand of metal. Sung vocals are punctuated by enthusiastic screams while the instrumental aspect of the songs reflect that dichotomy, offering bright, strong melodies incarnated as heady, hard metal.
Such tracks as the band’s electrifying single “Atrium†– which also boasts a video – reveal what a fusion occurred with the combined talent of these musicians. Dueling vocals, heavy but harmonious guitar melodies and a groove-rich rhythm section come together in a sizzling union of musical elements that rises into being as rich, colorful modern metal.
“It definitely represents the elements of our sound – up-tempo drums, catchy riffs played on heavy distorted guitars, some vicious screams mixed into catchy clean vocals over a melodic chorus, some ripping guitar solos, melodic breakdowns with clean guitars, lots of melody and more,†enthuses one band member.
The song represents the hopes and fears of an indie band fighting for its chance in the music industry. It establishes the scenario of a band – name glowing on the marquee – taking the stage, ready to jam – and finding an empty auditorium. It has the intensity of a fever dream and the depth of music one expects from an intelligent, thoughtful band.
The foundation for Sight Unscene was laid in 2004 when guitarist Mike Halsdorff posted an ad seeking a drummer. At the time, Halsdorff’s band was intact, but by the time he received a response from drummer John Jackson, Halsdorff’s group had withered away.
But Mike was still out to play some metal, and so, with Jackson aboard – and guitarist Tony LaMarra, a friend of John’s – Sight Unscene was formed. Tony had come to the audition simply to hang out and enjoy the music, but he was invited to become an active participant. The trio – still operating under the banner of Beneath the Surface, the name of Mike’s old, now-defunct band – began what became the lengthy task of finding a bass player and a singer. In the process, Beneath the Surface became Rhetoric.
In 2005, Anthony Dedrick joined up, offering his bass services. The next step was another name change. Now the group was known as Sight Unscene. In early 2006 with the vocal slot still unfilled, Anthony agreed to take on those duties as well. Eventually, having proven himself behind the mic, Erik Robertson was brought into the fold to take over bass and allow Dedrick to focus his energies on vocals – a decision the band says opened up its creative possibilities even further.
The future boasts some important shows as well as digital distrubution of Devils in the Details on ITunes and other major digital store fronts. Sight Unscene has also revealed that it has begun tracking of it's sophomore release and these musicians are excited. “We feel like we’ve made a major step forward as far as songwriting and growing individually as musicians and that will definately show on the next record.†The path to putting Sight Unscene together was long and challenging, but, say these metal performers, it was worth it to see a bright future opening up. 7/08
