Band Members: ANOTHER GREAT REVIEW!Nappy Brown, Long Time Coming (Blind Pig BPCD 5119)
Reviewed by Tony Russell in Mojo 171, February 2008, p. 108.Storming return for the 1950s R&B singer.
Here's a turn-up: a veteran practitioner of blues and (in the old sense) R&B makes a comeback album that begs no favours of its listeners. At 76, Nappy Brown -- he of the "l-l-l-l-l" gimmick, first exhibited on his 1955 hit Don't Be Angry, which he remakes here with gusto -- applies his very respectable vocal chops to a well-chosen setlist of mostly straightforward but not over-familiar blues. He's backed with discretion and period accuracy by a quintet featuring the undersung but brilliant guitarist Sean Costello, with ocassional horn flavouring and cameo appearances by Junior Watson and Bob Margolin; the event was affectionately and skillfully supervised by Brown's old friend Scott Cable. Been a l-l-l-l-long time coming, but well worth the wait
