Influences: Nate Pennington, John Colby, Eric Van Staveren, Mac Marshall, and U2 -- "Kung Fu" fighting was the first song I remember ever hearing... I say this cause it's one of my few memories of living on an Navajo reservation at age 3 and 4... and I remember dancing around to that song in my living room to the delight or annoyance of anyone watching... From there music draws a blank... then, I remember all those classic 70's songs that blared from parent's station wagon... thinking back, music saved my parents too... not much conversation now that I think about it... just "love" songs from Elton John -- shit.in.truth... I don't know even half the names of the artists I loved as a kid, but if I heard the song, I could sing along... Great music I remember when I was growing up... My parents liked the obvious... Aretha Franklin.Al Green.Stevie Wonder. My mother adored Diana Ross. My mother's maiden name was Ross so I think my mother had a secret affinity for her... Who else? My father loved the blues... Bobby Blu Bland (sp?).B.B.King... then he had Otis Redding. Lou Rawls. Curtis Mayfield... the list is so long... Isaac Hayes.Marvyn Gaye... then I have an older sister who introduced me to Parliament. The Jackson Five... Yes, I'm black, and that makes a difference I guess... yet I grew up in mostly "white" neighborhoods... I was the only black boy in my elementary school for example... thus, most of my friends I grew up with liked Van Halen, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, The Eagles, rock... good rock... great songs... highschool years... I enjoyed Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Run DMC, then I really got into "progressive" or "alternative" music... For all you dissers of the 80's -- kiss.my.ass... because before the 80's there was no category considered "alternative" -- there were no labels, record companies, people willing to invest money into anything "alternative" -- I'm sure I'm inaccurate to some degree, but 80's people and music knowers feel what I'm saying... before the 80's, there was no "alternative" stations on the radio -- nowadays, artists can actually hope to become rich being "alternative" when before being "alternative" was truly musicians trying to reach a different place... my opinion is mine...to add to later...
Sounds Like: experimental music...
