Phillip whack was born in columbia,s.c...He began playing the saxophone at age 11....Eventhough he took a liking to it at an early age, he didnt get serious until further study in high school and started taking lessons....It was at that time that he would really began to practice and hone his skills...As people begn to notice is work ethic , he would be awared the John Phillip Sousa award and most improved musician award which would be quite a feat at the high school level..He would then attend Brevard College to further his study in music...Phillip up until this point was only classically trained....It was at this time that he would began his trianing in jazz..He would be inlfuenced by the likes of John Coltrane, Miles Dvis, Wayne Shorter,Herbie Hancock,Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter ,Grover Washington jr , and Woody Shaw to name a few...Sence his early days of playing, Phillip has gone on to perform The Glenn Miller Orchestra,jazz greats such as Wycliffe Gordon and Tom Browne....R&b greats such as Aretha Franklin and Angela Winbush, The Temptations, The Ojays, and The Four Tops...He has opened for artsists such as Norah Jones, The whalers, The Sun Ra Arkestra, Al Jarreau and Patti Austin.....He has been involved in clinics with the likes of Ernie Watts, Chris Vadala,Lenny Pickett, Dick Oates, Wynton Marsalis....Phillip's travels have taken him to 48 states , Canada and Japan...He is now an arstist in residence in Charlotte,N.C.
