Do What You Will, But Harm None

My Interests

Sociology, Education, Cooking, Learning, Reading, Fiction, History, Nature, Language, Guinness, Libraries, Politics, England, Boats, Paganism, Technology, Plants, Cats, Clean Air, Traveling, Communication, Music, Art, Interesting Stories, Theories, Anthropology, New Ideas, Diversity, Moderation, Growth, Recycling

I'd like to meet:

Unique, interesting people for conversation, bonfires, hikes, and protests against fascism. Other geeks. People to go dancing with! Oh, and these people too:

Music:

Liz Fraser, you are my dream woman.

Likes: Interesting, Progressive Techno Especially! Amazed at the quality of the music coming from Germany lately, particularly the Kompakt label. Also, international music, especially Scandinavian and African. Bluegrass. Funk. Old Country. New Wave. Prince. Funky Hip-Hop. Britpop. Classic Rock. Blues. Speed Metal. Ambient. Soul. Classical. Jazz. Rockabilly. Stereolab. Instrumental. Mexican Rock. Trip-Hop. Samba. Folk. History podcasts.

Dislikes: New Country. Aaron Neville. Gangsta Hip-Hop. Top 40. Indie Rock.

Movies:

I especially live for documentaries of all kinds. I love to learn and they are a great medium.

I also enjoy comedy, foreign, sci-fi, drama. I love movies with intriguing stories, well-developed characters, and convincing set design. It's so much fun when a film can completely draw you into its world. The best directors are the ones who can make you feel like a fly on the wall, not a person in the theater.

Some all-time faves: Aguirre: Wrath of God, The Goonies, Being There, Harold & Maude, You Only Live Twice, Ghostbusters, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, My Best Fiend, The Big Lebowski, The Secret of Nimh, La Dolce Vita, Nights of Cabiria, Star Wars, I'm No Angel, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Elling, Blood Simple, True Romance, Reefer Madness, Depeche Mode 101, Mary Poppins, Excalibur, Touch of Evil, 28 Days Later, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, Time Bandits

Television:

Hooray internet! I get to watch all this crap without even owning a TV. Don't have much time for it, but do enjoy watching as long as the commercials have been taken out.

All-time favorite is by far the Simpsons, but I also take pleasure in the viewing of Cheers, Seinfeld, Lost, Frasier, Star Trek Next Generation, A-Team, Knight Rider, Are You Being Served?, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, Beavis & Butt-head, Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, Married With Children, Mr. Bean, Quantum Leap, Red Dwarf, South Park

Books:

Current favorites:

"The Divine Invasion" by Philip K. Dick. My latest fave from the socio/sci-fi master. Hilarious and thoughtful story about God's return to earth after thousands of years in exile on a distant planet. Since the story is set hundreds of years in the future, technology has advanced to levels where the religious and political bureaucracies have safeguarded against this potential threat to their dominance. Like all his stories, he flawlessy blends a fun narrative with fascinating sociological theories.

"Armed Madhouse" by Greg Palast. My favorite journalist goes out on a journey of discovery through DC, finding many funny little side stories along the way. I love the way he flavors his descriptions.

"The World Is Flat" by Thomas Friedman. He's a great columnist, reporter, and even better novelist. One of the most important books of the 21st Century so far.

Heroes:

My parents. My family. My friends. Ralph Nader. MLK. Joan of Arc. Lewis Lapham. Mae West. Roald Dahl. Ignatius Reilly. Elizabeth T., wherever you are.

It's Good To Be Wrong

I often like to ponder how our culture values certain traits over others. Lately I've been thinking about how we so greatly value "conviction" and, consequently, "faith." These values are highly prev...
