About Me

I am a writer... ideally. At the moment I'm an English major at the University of Utah and a waitress for a living. I believe in anything--that is, I'm not making any decisions right now about what exists and what doesn't (God, heaven, hell, intelligent design, whatever). As far as my ontology goes, I think life is interesting and exhilarating, people are unique and innately valuable in their uniqueness, and the best way to enjoy life is to let go of your pride and your need to define things and just drink in the experience. Learn. Experiment. I think I may be a budding hippie.

My Interests

Reading, music, theater, hiking, shopping, Hold 'Em, travel, beaches, languages (German and French), wine (I'm working on learning more), film

I'd like to meet:

Friends! Especially people that I've lost touch with or haven't seen in a while.

Music:

Red Hot Chili Peppers is and probably always will be on the top of my list. I also love Coldplay, U2, Outkast, System of a Down, Modest Mouse, Ani Difranco, White Stripes, Stone Temple Pilots, and Moby. More recently I've gotten into Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple, Dropkick Murphys, and Blue October. Some of my favorite songs are:Dosed (RHCP) Piano Man (Billy Joel) Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen) Angels (Sarah McLachlan) Chop Suey (System of a Down) Waterfalls (TLC) My Own Worst Enemy (Lit) What Would You Do (City High) Forgiven (Alanis Morissette)These are all terrifically good songs, so go download them now.

Movies:

American Beauty, Shakespeare in Love, French Kiss, Kill Bill One and Two but especially Two, The Whole Nine Yards, Into the Woods, Love Actually, Zoolander, 40 Year Old Virgin, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Stranger than Fiction, almost anything with Maggie Gyllenhall, the Last Kiss

Television:

I don't watch much TV anymore because of school and work, but I love Sex and the City, I adore the American version of The Office, and I still have a mild addiction to Lost.

Books:

My favorite books are Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, the Seventh Son series by Orson Scott Card, Timequake by Kurt Vonnegut, anything by Chris Crutcher (Whaletalk. Ironman. Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes.) A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers, The Chosen by Chaim Potok, High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. As for classics: The Sun Also Rises. Catch 22. In Cold Blood. And, okay, Pride and Prejudice.

Heroes:

I can never answer this. I look to different people for different things. I've always looked up to people like Winston Churchill and Ghandi--people who seem grounded, have a sense of humor, and never lose their idealism.

My Blog

Myspace ate my blog. Here are the remains.

Aargh. Myspace deletes yet another masterpiece of a blog. Okay, maybe not a masterpiece, but one that made me smile and might have made you smile too, if only a sarcastic smile. But no. The universe s...

Sex, religion, and the sublime

This week has been a thoughtful one. I went to two very cool lectures given by Bill Viola, Peter Sellers, and other very smart people. They talked about art and the world today. Those a...

Random babble

Now that I'm comfortably certain that practically no one reads these, I can say whatever I like. If you happen to be reading this, by some freak chance or terrible web disaster, know that these are pu...
