"Legendary Russian group who operate on the fringes of noise, pop and improvisation. Their instrumental sound is built out of specially amplified metal debris, fused with brittle guitar distortion and disturbing voice overs. They generate a level of spiritual intensity which could only emanate from the old "East".
CHRIS CUTLER
"As cosy and home-like as a Rostock satellite town."
"ZAP"
"Zga's direct uncompromising approach carries a devastating emotional clout...their extraordinary power peaks into intense monolithic pulses."
"THE WIRE"
St.Petersburg based ZGA made their debut in Soviet rock underground in the mid 1980s. Eternal mavericks, they acquired a cult status not only for their audacious mix of prog, industrial, post- punk and the avant-garde but for the enormous array of self-made instruments manufactured by the band's leader Nick Sudnick. This album features a few tracks from ZGA's latest, more accessible albums (think Test Department meets Captain Beefheart), as well as FIGS, a new all-percussion outfit with Nick Sudnick. Other members of FIGS include a British percussionist Marcus Godwyn and Ekaterina Fedorova, an accomplished drummer who amongst others performed with legendary Faust.

Nick Soudnick, the founding member of ZGA, began creating his own instruments, called Zgamoniums, by attaching contact microphones to metal sheets, plates of steel, iron grids, springs, and other found objects and metallic scraps. The recorded reverberations allowed him to create powerful music without performing it at a loud volume. Producing sounds by stroking contact-miked metal sheets with whips or hammering the springs with mallets, among other techniques, Soudnick was able to achieve sustained, low-frequency resonances that were picked up by the contact mikes. The microphones used by ZGA were never designed for musical purposes, but were used in Russia as a signaling devices that sent a single electrical impulse whenever, for instance, the glass to which the mikes were attached was broken .Acting as an unusual pickup for instruments, several of these mikes were attached to the body of the instrument at different portions to pick up different resonances. The sound of the resulting improv noise, described by Finnish industrial musician Anton Nikkilä, functions as “a metaphor of the late Soviet or post-Soviet everyday life: rusty, broken-down, unpleasantly dominated by cold metal, functioning to seemingly impenetrable, absurd logic.â€

ZGA was started by Nick Soudnick and Valery Dudkin (1965 - 2004) in Riga in March 1984. Later the group was joined in by Alexander Zhilin (1959 - 1994), Michael Yudenich, Vadim Petrenko, Emily and Eva Molchanova.
In 1989 Chris Cutler and Recommended Records released ZGA's first LP (Point East PE-02). Thus revealing the group to the world.
At the end of 1991 on the suggestion of "Pushkinskaya-10" Art Centre Zga moved to S.-Petersburg.
After Alexander Zhilin's death the group stopped being permanent. Nick Sudnick has been inviting various musicians for his different projects. Since 2000 ZGA permanent musicians are Ekaterina Fedorova (drums), Ramil Shamsudinov (trombon) and Valeria Kildeeva (violin).
In middle of the 90s Nick's artistic focus shifted from piezo-electric pickups, original sound sources inveted by himself, towards much wider range of sounds.
Since 1999 Nick actively collaborates with Engineering Theatre AKHE and makes soundtracks for their performances.
Sudnick has several side projects. He participates in Vetrophonia, his mutual project with Alexander Lebedev-Frontov (Linija Mass, Stalnoy Pakt). He has collaborated with various painters and artists. He also played in Sergey Kuryokhin's Pop Mechanics. In 2005 LongArms Records released Delikatessen - the joined project of Nick Soudnick and Vjacheslav Gaivoronskij. Nick's latest project FIGS gathered together Ekaterina Fedorova (Iva Nova, ZGA), Alexei Ivanov (Union of Commercial Avant-guarde, Nado Podumat) and Markus Godwyn (The Noise of Time).
