I love books with a Southern voice and somehow books involving childhood adversity and maternal abandonment seem to find me....hmmmm? In my defense have you ever noticed EVERY Disney cartoon has this very theme? On that note: ON THE OCCASION OF MY LAST AFTERNOON= each line read gives your HEAD the most eloquent Southern voice--its simply unavoidable, delicious and phonetically vicarious despite the drama. warning: you may pick up a little accent. COLD MOUNTAIN=, a REAL love story, steeped in misery and yearning, some parts were written so beautifully I had to read and re-read before I turned the page and you'll find the history lesson you never learned in school--Movie is NOT the same. THE HISTORIAN=, decadent travelogue... so intriguing Eastern Europe seems the perfect vacation. IN THE CASTLE OF THE FLYNNS=, set in 1950's Catholic Chicago, bust-a-gut sweetness of a boy coming of age without his parents and finding where he belongs. PIGGIE PIE=, "Fork over the Pork"...best read out loud. THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES=, the Feminine: lost and found. & anything by my homeboy, Garrison Keillor--mainly because I love the way his nose whistles when he breathes....it happens in books too...not just radio! AND the great storyteller, Isak Dinesen for reasons best kept secret. I'd hate to be too much of an open book..... ...but like you care.
Ben, of course.
