Bio
Jay Alexander has been placing pen to pad for over two decades with no reason other than to communicate a means of self-expression and creativitism. (Witness that he still thirsts to create his only language of expression). Being born and raised in the early 1970s ghetto impoverished Westside streets of Chicago was no easy endurance for Alexander. Mixed with vigilant society chaos, racial equality revolutionaries, illicit narcotics, and inner city blues blanketing every corner where the less fortunate called home, an outlet such as poetry was far, few and between. However, Alexander was deeply influenced by the likes of soulful singers such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Prince, Brand New Heavies, Lil’ Louis, Amel Larrieux, D-Influence, Sade, Zero 7, Julie Dexter, and Erykah Badu, along with a long list of other lyrical inspirers. When asked, “When did Jay Alexander begin writing poems?†Alexander replies, “I just call them letters since forever.â€
Around the late 1970s/early 1980s, a genre of music was taking off to infinite proportions. That genre was being called, “Hip Hop/Rap.†It embraced the inner city struggles and gave a national platform for young urban individuals to express themselves. Couple these two expressive means of communication, and what you have incubated, two decades later, is Alexander’s first full length studio project, “Substance Abuse.â€
The Surgeon General warns repeated and extended use of this substance may cause increasing levels of intelligence, severe acute amounts of social awareness, and a possible irreversible cultural purity within the Spoken Word & Hip Hop commununity!
The power of word play is magnified when it is concocted with a surreal, intellectual, out-of-this-world, creative mental digestion for diction. It places more responsibility on readers and listeners to allow their mental elastic versatility to loom within atmospheric surfaces other than the planet on which they currently cohabitate.
With the passing of years and growth backed by billions of dollars, it seems that the #1 question for the cultural movement called Hip Hop is, “Where has the creative force gone within this genre of music?†Hip Hop seems more “conveyer beltâ€- produced nowadays, since everyone and just about everything has their capitalistic hands fondling it. One cannot “knock the hustle†of how many individual men and women (specifically African-American) have profited from this financial burst within Hip Hop, nor deny how Hip Hop has assisted the same individuals with rising above poverty levels. But one also cannot ignore the profusely damaging exponential amounts of social and racial infections that Hip Hop’s upswing is also incurring.
During the past six years, Alexander has spent the millennium sharing the stage with this generation’s profound and poignant poets including: Georgia Peach, Avon, Von, Reggie Gibson, The Last Poets, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Roy Ayers, Jon Goode, Black Ice, and several other commercially successful authors of today. Alexander infuses the poetry/spoken word embodiment of subject matter and less constrictive word form with the rhythmic movement of music within Hip Hop’s gated community. In time, the world will hold Alexander in the same regard as those stellar artists who esteem him well. And with the same token, Alexander will help bring the purity back to Hip Hop, accentuating the wealth of its expression and creativity, inspiring a mental capitalism that will only influence his readers and listeners to incur intellectual interest instead of ignorance.
