The band, Butte La Rose, summons the quintessential southern roots sound that is prevalent throughout Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama. The sound brings to mind moss covered oak trees lining a bayou back road where a rundown honky tonk blasts its music into the night. The hard country, swamp pop, zydeco, blues, and southern rock influences are clear in the song stylings of the young singer/songwriter Reed Luckett Wiley. Butte La Rose was founded in 2004 and originally consisted of three members. Reed Luckett Wiley pounding out hard-driving acoustic rhythms along with stylized finger picking while singing lead vocals accompanied by his brother, Cooper Wiley, blowing a hard-edged harmonica, picking mandolin, slide guitar, and singing harmony. The brothers have played music since they were very young following their father’s influence into music stylings they came to love and play so well. The third member is a young lady by the name of Brooke Seguin who supplies the beautiful harmonies equal in power only to the likes of Emmy Lou Harris. Leslie Van Trease formerly of the band, Remy Zero, decided to produce and play on the EP demo recording “The Rose Mountain†after reviewing a demo submitted by Reed Luckett Wiley of the songs he had written and performed with Butte La Rose. Leslie envisioned the hard-driving emotion evoking southern country rock sound tailor made for Reed’s songs and is present in the power of the recording, “The Rose Mountainâ€. If you are lucky enough to retain a copy of this recording, you will bear witness to the beginnings of what could be an undeniable force in the music genre of alternative country. The name of Butte La Rose was obtained from an exit off Interstate 10 into the Louisiana Atchafalaya Basin Swamp. Open the cover of “The Rose Mountain†and take a trip down that dusty Louisiana back road.
