Before I really get into the "meat" of this profile let me
share with you a quick snapshot of who I am, where
I came from and why I can talk about this stuff (I'll be quick).
I've been a home business entrepreneur for over 3 years now
(I'm writing this at the end of 2007). In
that time I have been
BURNED big time, scammed out of thousands of dollars, I've meet hundreds
of people (most of them fantastic) and thankfully I've made hundreds of
thousands of dollars.
Now, I'm not going to sit here and tell you how great I am and why you should join me in business - you've heard that, I've heard that, everyone has heard that and frankly it's annoying.
What I will do though is honestly and authentically share with you
what I have learned to look for in a home business over the past few
years.
You see, since I've had some big wins and but I've also fell flat on my face in business. Because of that, I can share with you information that I know is valuable.
So here goes: From my experience, I firmly believe that there are 4 things you ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE to be successful in a home business. (Please leave me comments or email me your thoughts about these 4 areas).
System
The days of old multi-level marketing companies are OVER. If you are still making a list of family and friends and pitching your business on to those people - STOP NOW. You are destined for a complete failure. This is 2007 (days away from 2008), get with the program my friends. That stuff DOES NOT WORK. If someone tells you it does, do this.... turn around, and RUN.
Today, we have a thing called technology and as much as some people would like to fight this fact - TECHNOLOGY WORKS.
In order to be successful in a home business you must have a system that does the "heavy lifting" for you. What do I mean?
You DO NOT have a system if:
-
you are on the phone calling leads all day
you are the person selling and convincing people as to how great
your business is
your phone is ringing off the hook from people who need 3-ways
you are attempting at any point in time to persuade anyone as to
why this business would be a good fit for them.
What your system should do:
-
it should generate leads, separate those leads into 2
categories... #1 - tirekickers (the people who waste your time) and
#2 - Serious (people who get started)
Your system should include a turn-key website so that new
members have a website from the instant they get started
Your system should do follow-up for you
Your system should have a sales support team that continually
calls serious leads and helps them get over their fear
Your system MUST be DUPLICATABLE. This is
the #1 most important factor - if you have a system, but no one else
can do it - you're screwed.
Large Profits
A sad fact in online business these days is that people think it is easier to sell a low priced product than something that costs a lot.
It may be true, customers may be more apt to spend $15 on a product because there isn't a lot of risk involved with that, but it is going to cost you the EXACT same amount of money to advertise that $15 product as it will a $1,000 product. If you and I both set up an advertising account on google. You sell a product that makes you $10 and I make $1,000 off my product, we are both going to pay the exact same for the advertising space.
You are going to have to sell 100 of your product to my 1. That means you're advertising is going to have to be a lot more effective, your system that much more streamlined, your website more effective etc. You get the point. You do a hell of lot more work to make $1,000 than I would.
I've been in businesses over the last 3 years that had commissions ranging from $49 all the way up to $8,000. Guess where I made most of my money. I made hundreds of thousands of dollars selling products that paid me over $1,000 for each sale.
I lost a boatload of money marketing crappy little things that sold for $50.
So save yourself the pain - market products that are going to pay you the big bucks.

Training & Support
This is an important area. Most home businesses are going to provide you with training and support these days. Most are going to be free. But, the thing you want to pay attention to is WHO is providing the training and support.
If you are only getting training from your mentor, or her mentor, or your team... or some other scenario like that. You have a recipie for disaster.
Why?
Because you are only getting a small handful of the knowledge and expertise available to you.
You should be getting trained from the company leaders themselves on a regular daily basis. If you find a business that does not have training available EVERYDAY, it's not good.
Your training should include getting started instructions, advertising training, mindset training and daily doses of motivation, inspiration and brainstorming.
A lot of people are new to home businesses or they've struggled in a home business. Be sure to look for this type of training to help you.
Rewarding Compensation Plan
One of the big things I learned in my 3 years (mainly while I struggled) is that if you don't have a rewarding compensation plan in place - you're in trouble.
Home businesses are a lot like franchises. They are meant to be duplicated. If your compensation plan does not reward duplication you are going to constantly be spinning your wheels without getting very far.
If you have a compensation plan that rewards your efforts you can very easily be making a 5-figure income a month with just a small handful of people working on your team.
Product
This area is a funny one. A lot of home businesses start backwards. Meaning - a group of people get together and come up with a great compensation plan, an idea for a state of the art system and ideas of how to train. So, they decide to put together a home business and they create a product.
Unfortunately, what usually happens is they create a product that is nothing more than a piece of crap you could get anywhere.
The right way to start a business is to have a product that is in high demand. A product that millions of people are looking for. A product that you could sell for 3 or 4 times what it costs and still make a lot of sales. Once you have that - they you build the home business system, training, comp plan etc.
There are a lot of businesses online today that charge thousands of dollars for a product and you could get the same thing at a bookstore for $35 or a seminar for $200.
If you're product isn't valuable to people - no one will buy it and you will fail.

Now, there are other areas that are important to being successful in a home business. The 4 I've listed above are 4 that I find very important to your success.
I've been on both sides of the table - I've been broke because of a home business and I've made a ton of money because of a home business. I can assure you that when I make my money - it's because those 4 areas are involved.
