Christian Myspace Layouts***** BEYOND THE WALLS OF THE CHURCH *****Shar is most commonly known for her powerful Prophetic voice in the Body Of Christ, but there's another side to this humble Woman of the word, she feeds many with her passionate"Encouragement God's Way" writings that is shared on my-space daily, she's written and performed at gatherings such as Women In White and Speaking Truth Beyond The Four Walls Of Todays Church conferences. Her gift for hearing the voice of God led her into the thick of ministry, but that was never Shar's intention. She simply loved writing for her local church's monthly newsletter and was willing to walk through each door God opened.Shar's spiritual-mother instilled in her a love for words, and from a young age she found writing to be her greatest form of self-expression. Years later, as she sat in Miami coffee bars and clubs,
Shar was exposed to a world of performance poetry that changed her life. "I encountered so many people who are great poets. I heard people who are darn good at what they do, People who knew how to say what they wanted to say. I was inspired," she shares.Week after week as church ended she would make her way to these places. As she looked around the places she went to hear poetry, she saw people crammed into rooms, shoulder to shoulder.
Shar noticed that the audience came seeking something- they wanted to hear truth. The topic didn't matter as long as someone spoke with conviction and talked about the truth of his or her life.
"When I realized that's why people come to these clubs, I remember telling God that I wanted to go into rooms like this and share who He is," Shar recalls. "Maybe the audience would identify with it and eventually respect that it's true."
Although she comes from a heritage of ministry, Shar never had any ambition of performing in church. In her world, people who wrote did it to vent or express anger that couldn't be spoken out loud, but she found a love for Christ, people and writing.
Sure she might write a piece of poetry about God, but she would share it where all the poets were, not necessarily for a congregation of believers.
Today, most of Shar's Christian supports want to read her writings, and lately she's been asked to write for many non-Christian magazines. Shar says. In her eyes, she's far from being a professional poet or writer. She's just sharing a gift God has given her and she's as likely to do that at church and anywhere else God allows her to go.***** TRUE TO HERSELF *****The direction her ministry has taken quite a shift from Shar's childhood dreams. Raised in a family that believed in God, but didn't go to church much, to Shar church became her life.
After becoming a Christian at the age of 12, she immersed herself in all things church, "Growing up, I felt the pressure to be a good example, to be what other people expected me to be. I was always taught to be separate from the world. And to accept and enjoy and relish in the fact that as a believer I was different," Shar explains. At an early age she felt sure she was supposed to be a minister and thought she'd go to seminary. But Shar always had a love for people. She wanted to be around those who were different from her and that meant she wanted to be around nonbelievers as much, if not more, than believers.
Attending a Christian high school for two years while living in a all girls home affirmed in Shar her God-given desire to be in the world. I didn't want to become sanitized,"she says. "I've always had something in my heart that involved being in the world. And the more mature I've become, the clearer it's become. That's still my heartbeat today."
So Shar did become a "minister"- but her everyday, truth-driven approach to life provides as much opportunity for her to minister by way of writing as any collar, title or intellectual approach to the bible might have.
Shar's writings is being read and influenced in arenas beyond the church. "As a medical journalist, God opened doors into the industry though freelance writing.
I'm learning so much about the people, and their daily needs by sharing what God gives me to write," she says. And the knowledge she's gaining as a journalist only expands her platform and ministry.
When asked if she felt called to minister to a particular nation or people group, Shar gave an unexpected answer "I want to reach people who are of the hip-hop generation," she shares. "Sometimes we villainize people like Jay-Z and 50 Cent. God loves them. He has a purpose for their lives. How is anybody going to know if we don't tell them? My view on evangelism has changed. It's not a project it's about relationships."***** A TALE OF TWO WORLDS *****"God always reminds me that the gift isn't mine. I have to be smart about how I use it, and where I go. I've felt like I'm living in two worlds- people in church don't want nothing to do with people in the secular world. Shar's confesses. "Neither environment is more important than the other- God can use what I say and write on my-space, in a coffee bar or in a church.
Whether she's speaking or writing, Shar is focused on what's true, what she knows, and what she's experienced.
Sometimes that's talking about God to college students and young adults as well as at nursing homes for the elderly, and sometimes that's talking about hip-hop in a coffee bar. And when it comes to her writings, Shar is writing on topics from who God is to her grandparents to mental health issues that is hidden it self in the church. We have to learn how to flow on different levels as Christians of today, as we reach the lost, and at times the found at any cost."My relationship with God has become a lot more real, especially in the last couple of years," Shar shares. "I lived in a bubble for a long time because I spent a lot of my time doing my same thing every day work, church, and that was about it. I was so busy doing the work of ministry that I wasn't taking the time to reach anybody. "Since then I've met a lot of different people that have broadened my horizons and in a way made me more human, more real, more down to earth. So now when I come to God, I can just be myself and see Him how He really is," She says.
So it seems that Shar does live in two worlds- the very thing most Christians with traditional upbringings have been warned against. But for her, there's no better way to do ministry. The fine line between the sacred and secular keeps Shar relevant and creates an avenue for ministry that she would have missed serving in a traditional manner.
