BIO
"[Matthew] Sage began Castles as a solo project two years ago, building compositions on his laptop, in a style not far from that popularized by British “folktronica” musician Kieran Hebden of Four Tet. Sage takes live samples of organic instruments (guitar, percussion, vocals, etc.), feeds them through his computer and spits them back out into the speakers, all cut up and abstracted. The result is an appealing jumble that often incorporates heavy, near hip-hop beats pushing up against spacey guitar strums and Sage’s reverb-soaked vocals floating over woozy electronic ambience.Four months ago, with a short tour through the Midwest and the South looming, Sage converted Castles from a solo project to a live band. Fort Collins musician Joseph Yonker joined on bass, lap steel-guitar, percussion and effects, and Boulder-based Logan Corcoran took to the drum set. With Sage on guitar, vocals and laptop, the group began translating his electronically enhanced recordings into a live setting.."
