About Me

This is my personal blog. Persons interested in my services as a violist should click on the top link in my friends list.
I play viola in Philadelphia folk/pop band Buried Beds. My fiance, Anthony, is a bass teacher. Last year, I left a school music teaching career and now make half of a living reselling textbooks.
Personal news:
*We have an official wedding date (early May 2008), we have a ceremony site, I finally tracked down my baptism certificate. Next up is touring reception sites and scheduling the dreaded pre-cana.
*We have just adopted 3 beautiful, long-haired guinea pigs from a rescue. Laugh if you want - we are ecstatic. Two are all black and identical, 1 is bright orange. Very Halloweeny.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

You, at my band's shows.
Next Buried Beds shows:
*Sun. Oct. 28, Khyber, with Physics of Meaning (not to be missed), Mitch Fiction, & Gianmarco Cilli (of National Eye). Show starts at 8, we probably go on around 10, 10:30. But I'd go earlier to see the 2nd band. $8.
*Sat. Nov. 10, Milkboy, Ardmore PA.
November show at JB's is off, but there may be a December show there.

Books:

Currently reading:
The Merchant of Venice (damn - why so anti hebrew?)
Favorites:
Testimony: The Memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich, Cod by Kurlansky, Blindness by Saramago, 1984 by Orwell.

Heroes:

My grandparents, Dziadze and Babczy.

Naming pets & Slavic folklore

I spent the morning trying to get naming ideas for my 3 new pigs (not as if there are any more pressing concerns in my life...), and in so doing, stumbled upon some crazy Polish and slavic myths and l...

Babczy the dance coach

I'm a little too brain-dead to write this in any kind of eloquent way, so I'll just get right to it.  This is my grandmother: Anthony and I go to the St. Hedwig's Polish Festival on Friday, make ...

Comfort zone

You know, if there's one thing I can say for myself, it's that I don't shy away from putting myself into potentially very awkward or embarrassing situations.  Things about which other people, of ...

Notes on the mini-tour of North Carolina & Virginia

Mini-tour is over, and I'm in the throes of a summer cold that came of sharing close quarters with a sick bandmate (tour pranks!), so what better a time to chronicle the thing. In a cou...

How Ive actually, kind of, almost been making a living the past month

I think I've mentioned here that I dabble in selling books on Half.com and Amazon.com.  Well, I've actually been doing a ton of business this summer, all due to textbooks.  I started out sel...

Babczy and the jerk in the sub shop

I was recently reminded of something that happened last year around this time - a clash between my grandmother and a young liberal. My grandmother owns a 3 room, modest cottage in South Bethany B...

Show about black eagles on PBS

Last night, I watched an intense nature documentary about black eagles.  I started watching because the eagles were beautiful, with wing spans at least a yard across, and flight mo...

Geeking out on the backyard wildlife, Vol. II

So last week I was concerned that nobody was using my bird house this year.  Finally - finally - a couple of chickadees moved in.  Not sure if their eggs are hatched yet.  Meanwhile, a...
