Movies:

the big lebowski, the godfather (all the parts, even III) fight club, pulp fiction, and any movie with zhang ziyi in it, even if it's ridiculously terrible. oh, and ong bak.

Television:

malcolm in the middle, law and order, but generally i try to avoid tv.

Books:

freedom from fear by aung san suu kyi, meetings with remarkable men by g.i. gurdjieff, ho chi minh: a life by william duiker, pol pot by phillip k. short, the book of five rings by miyamoto musashi, the wu-tang manual by the rza, baroque string playing for ingenious learners and the weapons of rhetoric- two excellent books on period performance and playing by judy tarling, the principles of violin playing by ivan galamian, reflections on a ravaged century by robert conquest, american scream: the biography of bill hicks by cynthia true, running with the devil: power, gender and madness in heavy metal music by robert walser, fight club and survivor by chuck palahniuk, six records of a floating life by shen fu, the foundation series and robot series by issac asimov, the ender series by orson scott card, 1984, animal farm, brave new world, the chronicles of narnia, the screwtape letters, and mere christianity by c.s. lewis, japanese death poems written by zen monks and haiku poets on the verge of death compiled by yoel hoffmann, johann sebastian bach: the learned musician by christoph wolff, atlas shrugged and the fountainhead by ayn rand, white line fever:the autobiography of lemmy kilmeister...and i have to admit i really do like the harry potter series.

Heroes:

aung san suu kyi, mahatma gandhi, nelson mandela, unequivocally. although his legacy is undeniably mixed, i admire ho chi minh for his anti-colonial stance and his ability to stand up to the french and the americans. but i'm not so sure he's a hero because of his maoist legacy. i'll think about it some more. bob marley, bill hicks, my parents, danny phillips(see: orion string quartet), and all people fighting for freedom and self-determination everywhere.
