"Very Bad Things..."
SINCE MATERIALISING IN 2004, Deviant UK has established itself as a star of the European Dark Alternative scene - proudly waving the flag for Britain. The band unleashed the long-awaited debut album 'Barbed Wire Star' in September 2006, spawning the anthemic club hits 'Raptured Saints' and 'Access Denied!'. Straddling darkest electro and gothic genres, their unique sound is powerful, distinctive and instantly accessible.
This band is defined onstage, consolidating an ever-growing fanbase with intensive live dates including the renowned Infest, Nocturnal Culture Night, Whitby and Dark City festivals among others. Their scene credentials received the royal seal of approval in October 2006 when Deviant UK were handpicked to be guests of the mighty VNV Nation at their unforgettable Homecoming show in Dublin. Since then, the band have enjoyed memorable shows with The Cruxshadows, Diary of Dreams, Absurd Minds and Seabound among many others. And this is just the beginning...
Deviant UK is masterminded by singer, songwriter and devilish frontman Jay Smith ("a true showman with an ego the size of a planet" - Rocksound Magazine). This is devilishly dark synthetic pop with a black heart, fusing glacial electronics to industrial beats while Smith's frozen, angst-ridden vocals coating every song in ice. Memorable, catchy hooks and fist-in-the-air choruses demonstrate an effortless understanding of pop science that makes Deviant UK stand head and shoulders above their peers.
This is a band that believes in the true value of the 'rock star'. As such, they are driven by a distinctive image and stage presentation that works hand-in-hand with the music. The live performances are defined by Smith - engaging audiences with a confidence that is equal parts arrogance, machiavellian charisma and neurotic control freak. That said, the cool bravado is counterbalanced by very human insecurity...and the eyes suggest more than a passing acquaintance with the deranged.
In a climate where manufactured pop is king, Deviant UK is a dark alternative that delivers both musically and visually. Obsessed with the darker side of life, Jay Smith's first-person view is suitably stark; everyone has a secret to hide, friends will always let you down and love inevitably ends badly. This is your guided tour to a world of sin, betrayal, paranoia and amphetamine logic, framed by a humour so black that it can only have come from having been there, seen it and done it.
Rock stars should be larger than life...and you have either got it or you haven't. Deviant UK tick that box with style. With the 'Barbed Wire Star' album already hailed as a classic debut, extensive European and US tour dates lie ahead to follow the recent triumphant performance at the legendary Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig. Collaborations with Peter Spilles [Project Pitchfork] and the mighty Rotersand will be released this Summer and the aptly titled second album 'Very Bad Things' is scheduled for release later this year: be bigger, darker and better. Who would bet against them now?
