About Me

Often forgotten are the beginnings. In a world where business is big and dollar signs are bigger, we often forget the roots of where it all started.
Remember dreaming about scoring the game-winning touchdown while playing catch in the backyard? Remember pretending to win a gold medal while learning how to ice skate on a frozen pond? We know about work, but how many of us remember the fun?
Whether it’s working the kinks out of a new song in their basement practice space or working on stage at a local rock club, the youthful movement that is Drowning the Silence refuses to forget the fun. In their words, “We write good, fun songs.”
It sounds simple, but the driving guitar riffs, pulse-pounding double kick drum, and rhythmic lead bass lines make Drowning the Silence multifaceted. Priding themselves on dynamics and interesting progressions while minding popular song structures adds to the complexity.
“We start writing a song with a jam feel, but later reform it for maximum impact,” says guitarist Bryan Johnson. “Make them something attainable, something to sing along with.”
The “fun” factor again came into play when the band was choosing a name.
“Drowning the Silence reflects the loud and aggressiveness of the music,” said bassist Mike Dyer. “Plus, DTS gave us a title, three letters for fans to chant.”
With the release of their self-titled EP, DTS is taking the fun to a new level and a larger audience. Their goals focus on gaining publicity and building a name within the local music scene.
Spending time in the studio for the first time also proved to be a fun experience, as they worked on perfecting their recordings.
“Recording was great,” says drummer Taylor Smith. “You learn so much about a song when you break it down. It helps make you really know your own music.”
The EP features some of the band’s favorite work, including the dual-harmonized guitar solos and catchy chorus of “Stay With Me.”
“Then there is ‘Music Gets the Best of Me,’” guitarist Reid Johnson points out. “It gets us pumped up.”
Maybe it’s the fact that these five have youth on their side, that they are unafraid to complicate things while breaking their efforts down to one simple fact: Music is supposed to be fun. Old and new fans alike are sharing in the sound that is Drowning the Silence; that game-winning backyard touchdown is just a stage away.
