About Me

The premier of the András Dés Trio was on the 23rd of October, 2007 at my favourite jazzclub (Nyitott Muhely) in Budapest. Many of our songs are in odd time signatures, and I was pleased to hear that the audience compared our performance to chamber music. Most of the pieces we played were composed by myself, but their final form bears the mark of many of hours joint work by all of us.The word that best characterizes the other two musicians in my band is probably 'accurate'. Not only are they accurate in the literal, technical sense of the word, but more importantly in their interpretation of the composer's ideas, as well as the articulation of their own emotions and musical personality.I have been an admirer of Szabolcs Olah's refined, thoughtful style of playing ever since I got to know him at School of Jazz at the Ferenc Liszt Academy. For the last two years we have been playing together in Kornel Fekete-Kovacs's Quintet. Szabolcs also plays in the Modern Art Orchestra, as well as his own highly recognized band, the Szabolcs Olah Quartet.Matyas Szandai I got to know while playing with him as a fellow rookie jazzman in the Elemer Balazs Group. Since then he has become one of Hungary's premier bassists. Currently, we play together in Miklos Lukacs's quintet. Matyas has recently recorded with such world famous musicians as Archie Shepp (with the Dresch Quartet), Kurt Rosenwikel (with the Daniel Szabo Trio) and Hamid Drake (with the Viktor Toth Tercet). As for myself, I am at the stage where I have finally found the right setup of drums and other percussion instruments that I really feel comfortable playing on. I use my left hand as a percussionist and my right hand as a drummer. In addition to the groups already mentioned, the Kaltenecker Trio and the Laszlo Des Septet were also important stages in my musical development. My current involvement in the Bea Palya Quintet, Agi Szaloki's bands, and the group Szajrol Szajra featuring the three folk singers Agi Szaloki, Agnes Herczku and Szilvia Bognar is also an important influence.Having been a sideman for several years, the birth of my trio marks my graduation to being a band leader. In addition to the freedom to realize my own musical ideas, my hope is that the new trio will become a unique voice on the Hungarian jazz palette.
