21 years old, Nigerian-born, Canadian-raised and a newcomer on the
hip hop scene... you'd be perfectly justified in calling her new blood.
But if you're going to judge her based on the length of time she's been
emceeing, scrap that thought. Isis is about to take the game to a whole
new level. It's a skillful emcee who can draw their listeners into their
experiences, but it's a rare one who can bring the crowd's imagination
to life. This is Isis's gift, displayed every time she picks up the mic.
Using her background as material for her lyrics, she elevates the art of
rhyme to new heights and, in turn, is flipping the Canadian hip-hop
scene on its head. Isis' focused energy, sheer skill and undeniable
talent has turned her into one of the most sought-after performers in
Toronto.
In less than a year since she decided to take this "rap thing"
seriously, Isis has managed to destroy microphones on stages shared with
underground hip hop legends like Bahamadia, Vast Aire (Def Jux) and M1
(Dead Prez); conscious hiphop band Tumi and the Volume (District Six
Music); and even the (over)hyped T.I. Her focus and drive landed her an
invitation to perform at the legendary Show Time at The Apollo, gaining
a fan in Kool Herc, the Godfather of Hip Hop. Fast-forward 4 months and
she's spitting into mics on the District Six "I Heart Boogey"
cross-Canda Tour, culminating in an unforgettable show at Monteal's
International Jazz Festival in front of a crowd of 5000. After a taste
of the homegrown, Isis has set her eyes on the rest of the world,
launching her "MySpace MyCouch" Tour, a clever set of gigs established
solely through her contacts on MySpace. So far she has performed in
Montreal, Philadelphia and Seattle, and will eventually find her way to
California.
When she's performing, her listeners are her co-conspirators. She draws
her audience into her performance, using her beats and lyrics to get
people hype. It is never a surprise to see this woman crowdsurfing
during her DJ's scratch solo, belting out lyrics while being carried by
her peers. High energy is an understatement. And yet, despite rocking
mad amounts of energy, Isis is a thoughtful poet and songwriter. As we
create ourselves through the stories we choose to reflect upon within
us, Isis reminds listeners through her honest words that it's OK to be
human.
With her self- released debut CD The Last Minute EP, Isis has got a lot
of people talking and needing to hear more. From California to Belgium,
the lady is steady building a tidal wave of sheer lyrical force and
energy that those who sleep will be forced to awaken.
