The very beginnings of what is now known as Modern Subject began on a cold winter night half a decade ago. Nate was strumming his guitar outside of the local coffee shop, when a bearded individual began singing along in between sips of his coffee. The notes carried well on the cool air and gave life to the chords resounding from the worn Guild. This night repeated over and over, but each time with a few more people on the patio listening and singing along. Nate soon learned that the bearded man’s name was Paul. The two began writing and playing songs on the patio until all hours of the night. They attempted to start a band several times, but the duo always ended up back on the patio with an acoustic guitar and an endless supply of brew. This went on for several years until Nate happened to run into an old friend named Dan. Dan was a talented drummer who had just left his previous band. The three immediately hit if off and began writing and playing together. While sitting on the patio, several months later, Nate began talking to a friend-of-a-friend named Erin. She just happened to be an amazing cellist with no band to play with. She came to a practice one night and fit in perfectly. The four constantly practiced and began playing at all the Orange County venues. After gaining some local success, they picked up guitarist Nick Parson, who brought the rhythm that was lacking as well as beautiful back-up vocals. The five are now best friends, all of whom work very hard to bring music to those in need. They have a 5 song EP available for free download on their MySpace page. All of the members are still known to frequent the same local coffee shop and will sometimes play a song or two on the infamous patio where everything began.
We were NOMINATED for the 2008 ORANGE COUNTY MUSIC AWARDS and have been featured in a Finland newspaper! Check the blog above!
