Welcome to Rough Branch

About Me

In a time that breaks
in cutting pieces all around,
when men, voiceless
against thing-ridden men,
set themselves on fire, it seems
too difficult and rare
to think of the life of a man
grown whole in the world,
at peace and in place.
But having thought of it
I am beyond the time
I might have sold my hands
or sold my voice and mind
to the arguments of power
that go blind against
what they would destroy.

-wendell berry-
I'm a hermity Unitarian Universalist gardener, old punk rocker, and quasi-ex-philosopher who mostly likes to hangout at home or outside.
I've wandered from coast to coast, in and out of the hallowed halls of academe. I partied in punk rock houses in Sacto, rode motorcycles, slung coffee, and got tattooed in SF, drove 2700 miles across the southern United States back to land from which I came. Descended south a few years later in to Mr. Jefferson's Virginia. Sat on his front porch and pondered my future. Although I fell in love with the Blue Ridge just like my granddaddy before me, I did not find a place for a body to think, but a place for a mind to be broken.
Again, I return to this place of my birth, and find myself coming home to myself.
I am active in my church and my neighborhood association . I am a passionate lover of Frick Park, Phipps, the Aviary, the Carnegie Library Main, yoga, local food, farmer's markets, Penguins hockey, heirloom tomatoes, organic produce, and sustainable agriculture. I believe that "There is a communion of more than just the body when bread is broken and wine is drunk." (M.K. Fisher)
I am also an NPR junkie & support WDUQ .

My Interests

Outdoorsy stuff, birdwatching, gardening, sustainable agriculture, Buddhism and meditation, yoga, cooking, hockey, philosophy, theology, exploring good restaurants, checking out different cultural events, music, volunteering, dorky historical stuff, travel, trying to stay sane in an insane world...

I'd like to meet:

People of the nerdly persuasion.
People who like trees.
People who like hiking and camping.
People who love music.
Hockey fans.
People who like to explore the City.
People who like to do dorky stuff.
People who like to go on hikes, explore new places, cook, check out new restaurants, see live music, play Scrabble, drink good beer, do the crossword, & who enjoy chill nights at home with a good dinner and a DVD.
People who like gardening, being outdoors, reading, listening to music, traveling, & historical things.
Down-to-earth, compassionate people with scholarly, creative minds and quirky Weltanshauungs.
I'm not into loud, smoky places or big groups of people. I like to have a drink or two, but I don't consider getting trashed a "social activity." I'm most comfortable in small groups of people with good conversation and good food.
Pretty, single women around my age with the above characteristics.
Jon Stewart, Thich Nhat Hanh and the Dalai Lama.
