CANADIAN BLACK THRASH METAL

About Me

Screaming out of the depths of the Western Canadian extreme metal scene, a new tide of violence and ferocity is creating shockwaves through the underground, leaving a trail of dazed fans and silenced critics in their wake. Its a calling that cant be ignored; a call for blood, a call for allegiance, a call for suffering
Sufferance was originally formed by Chad(Guitar/Vocals) and Lance(Bass); however, the two found themselves unable to find a drummer who understood the cross-pollination of thrash, death and black metal they were striving for. Things took a turn for the better in 2002 however with the addition of ex-Thorazine drummer Rob. The addition of Dave later that year on guitar and vocals only bolstered the Sufferance arsenal, and helped consolidate their position as one of the rising stars in their hometown of Calgarys metal scene.
The music itself draws from the same reckless speed experimentation that fueled early Kreator and Bathory, the same dark harmonies that marked Mercyful Fate and Dissection and the straightforward brutality of Destroyer 666 and Hypnosia. The result is a violent symphony of speed, precision and brutality; Sufferance simultaneously celebrate the properties that made the founders of black, thrash and death metal great, while at the same time expanding their sound into new arenas of viciousness.
To date Sufferance have shared the stage with some of North Americas leading metal bands, including Axis of Advance, Cryptopsy, 3 Inches of Blood and Operation Winter Mist, and have recently contributed a track to the Fire Unions most recent compilation, Winter Four. Dark clouds are gathering over Alberta it appears that the suffering has only begun.

Sufferance is easily one of the most impressive unsigned acts from Calgary. Playing a unique blend of intense black metal, thrash riffing, and raw melodies they easily caught my ear when I saw them play the Brickyard here in Vancouver.
Their demo CD, entitled "Purity in Death" starts off with "Night Breed". This relentless song pulverizes from the very beginning with shredding guitars, pounding drums. "The Rites of Purification" has a strong European vibe and flows smoothly from soft passages to brutal, Christ-crushing speed and tenacity. "Discipline- Aura" is third on this four track demo and offers more top quality metal. Melody if rampant and progression are key in this impressive song. The final track is "Purity in Death". This crushing track provides a concise ending to this demo with its ferocious aggression and brutality.
These guys are surely on the right track to metal divinity. Top notch musicianship is accented by strong stage presence and professional presentation. The recording quality is good and sounds like a bit early 90's bay area thrash. The mix is good and open without the digital sound found in modern recordings.
Check these guys out, you won't be sorry!

Drummer needed

In a mutual decision, Sufferance have parted ways with drummer Rob Grimmstone.  The reasons are our own and will not be discussed by us on any public forum(s).  We are sorry to see Rob leave...
