The life of Luis “LUCHO” Mejia is a
CONVOLUTED, TWISTED & ADVENTUROUS tale… SO KEEP UP!THE NAME “LUCHO” IN SPANISH TRANSLATES TO: I STRUGGLE.

Born in Queens-NY. LUCHO was the product of a turbulent love afair between a DISCO DJ & a Manhattan Seamstress. He was born into a family of LATIN: DJ’s, MUSICIANS & RECORD DISTRIBUTORS. This would prove to be a MAJOR influence later on in life as a DJ! He was given a DUAL upbringing in Queens NY & Barranquilla, Colombia until the age of 8. One too many, unforgivable, love affairs caused Lucho’s mother to leave his father one late night. Eventually calling Jersey City, NJ home.
Although he was like most children: enjoying drawing & coloring books. At about 8yrs old, he developed an almost FREAKISH talent of being able to MASTERFULLY copy (NOT TRACE) any drawing he would come across! From complicated NYC Graffiti to cartoons like: The Thundercats & Transformers. He became a bit of a NOVELTY among his schoolmates & neighbors. As well as local graffiti artists & drug-dealers. This UNCANNY ability made him a target for hustlers in NYC & NJ. LUCHO would soon learn his first hard lesson in life! Although his teachers nourished his talents & helped him win ENDLESS National art awards (sometimes 3-4 in a SINGLE month!), the lure of the STREETS was too strong! He was eventually befriended by a local comic shop owner who offered LUCHO small sums of money & endless comic books in exchange for large-scale reproductions of comic book images & covers. Happy “as a pig in shit!” to be receiving FREE comic books & what he perceived as “a lot” of money, LUCHO made himself into a virtual drawing FACTORY by the age of 11! Since LUCHO was able to reproduce these ink drawings VERBATUM, down to the line stroke, the shop owner would turn a HEFTY PROFIT!!! The shop owner eventually faced multiple accusations of child molestation from local parents. And learning that a mob of the city’s WORST thugs & pushers were headed for retaliation, he abandoned the shop, leaving it fully in tact with merchandise & all! It rained comic books & collectables that day in New Jersey! And so ended LUCHO’s 1st career as an EXPLOITED child artist…
This experience scarred LUCHO & he VOWED to NEVER reproduce another drawing! Despite this, he then chose to concentrate on learning to draw in the TRADITIONAL sense. Eventually being mentored by WORLD RENOUND artists: Painter-RAY LAGO/Marvel Comics (predecessor to Alex Ross), Inker-SAL AMENDOLA/DC Comics, Dark Horse & Batman. And his MOST IMPORTANT INFLUENCE & MENTOR: world renound Portrait Painter-JOHN BRADFORD, who LUCHO credits with “COMPLETELY elevating my technical skills & seeing more in me than JUST another ghetto youth…” Through John Bradford’s RELENTLESS teachings & the rest of the staff at the VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS Program at Jersey City State University, LUCHO became SOUGHT AFTER & given multiple scholarships by leading art schools across the country! Including S.V.A., PRATT & PARSONS, which he eventually chose to attend…
LUCHO also made a name for himself as his ALTER-EGO: DJ OPTIMUS PRYME alongside his with the rest of his crew who later went on to become who we know today as THE ALLIES. Although LUCHO was always strong part of the crew & blessed with many friends & acquaintances in the music industry, he was always the LONER of the group & chose early on not to participate as an OFFICIAL member of the TURNTABLE CRASH DUMMIES & ALLIES. At the age of 18, with MULTIPLE Art School Scholarships beating at his door, LUCHO remained TORN between his TWO loves… ART & MUSIC. Choosing INSTEAD to pursue a Career as an ARTIST & PHOTOGRAPHER.
As a VETERAN member of THE ANTAGONIST ART MOVEMENT in NYC, LUCHO has become a STAPLE in the NYC Underground Art scene. His work has ALSO reached the shores of Ireland, Australia, England & Canada, to name a few. He has earned a reputation for his UNFORGIVING portrayals of harsh & taboo subject matter such as: Child Abuse, Rape, Death & War, just to name a few. Despite this, his LARGEST following comes from his work involving EROTIC BBW Figure Paintings (BBW=Big Beautiful Women)…

In 2003, LUCHO's life came to a SCREACHING hault when he suffered a DEVASTATING back injury that left him partialy parylized & forcing him into SECLUSION! Leaving him to FIGHT against a DEEP depression, learning how to walk again & coping with his father's death! ... He emerged almost 3 YEARS later with an almost RE-BORN AURA!!! In FULL FORCE & fighting form... & apparently a STRONGER ARTIST! And he didn't WASTE time in going on the ATTACK! He once again is frequently exhibiting with THE ANTAGONIST MOVEMENT as well as with his team at URBAN XPERIENCE. Who's laundry list of accomplishments include multiple MURALS for the city of BALTIMORE, MD & set design for a late-nite ABC Talk Show. LUCHO has ALSO taken up reviving his MUSIC carreer by breathing LIFE back into his ALTER-EGO as DJ OPTIMUS PRYME...
