Live Promotions
Aside from being a small indie record label , vacuous pop also promotes live music shows in Oxford, and up until April held a regular monthly night at The Wheatsheaf on the 3rd Friday of the month.
Now though, for a number of reasons it's back to just doing occasional shows depending on what bands are touring and venue availability.
I don't run a venue or have a load of nights to fill so the emphasis is on quality rather than quantity, with line ups that hopefully complement each other, rather than just slinging a bunch of random bands on together.
Shows take place at either The Wheatsheaf, Port Mahon, Jericho or The Cellar, including some ace club type events with bands & DJs at the latter where you can get your dance on!
The shows are a chance to see some of the best underground/leftfield bands around - both national and international - and over the past 5 years the following quality acts have played, many of which were Oxford debuts...
Black Dice
Bloc Party
Foals
Hot Chip
Metronomy

Picastro
Beautiful and haunting, Toronto's Picastro craft bittersweet tunes of dissonance and melody that shake the foundations of dark, brooding and introspective music. The murmured, detached vocals of Liz Hysen superbly accompany the stark disparate soundscapes created by electric and acoustic guitars, drums, piano and cello.
Formed in 1997 at a time when the Toronto music scene was predominately catering to loud rock bands, early Picastro sets consisted solely of acoustic guitar and eventually cello. Since then the band has evolved considerably, expanding from their acoustic roots to include electric guitars, piano, and violin and live performances consisted of anywhere from one member to six members as Picastro played shows alongside Smog, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Mick Turner (of The Dirty Three), Cat Power, Elliott Smith, and longtime friends Cerebus Shoal.
For albums and live shows Liz has collaborated with many musicians including Evan Clarke, Owen Pallett, Rachel McBride and Zak Hanna as well as Tigerbeat 6 artist Dwayne Sodahberk and Jim McIntyre of the Sea Snakes.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

People into good bands who will come to the gigs.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Demo Policy
vacuous pop welcomes demos and whilst we have eclectic taste there are limits. Sadly there's already an Oasis, so there's no need for any bands to sound exactly the same is there? There's a Pete Doherty too, and a Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Jamiroquai and... These, and bands that try to emulate them aren't really for us. Neither is funk, definitely no funk.

There is currently a large backlog of demos to work through so please be patient if you've sent any in. If I like what I hear then I'll be in touch but am generally unable to provide feedback on your music or respond to messages due to the amount received.
