Little Schemers
Written February 6, 2008

The children lay their heads on soft, comforting pillows.
Their ears covered to drown out angry sounds. Tiny teardrops
moisten their innocent eyes—lips quivering at angry goodbyes.
They pull up their blankets hoping to shield themselves from this night.
Mom sits in his favorite chair holding her head in trembling hands.
Tears flowing down her cheeks—heart ripping as the door, he slams—
a repeat of the night before. She rocks herself back and forth
in an attempt to dissolve the searing pain burning through her veins.
The children feel the unbearable silence capturing this horrible night.
They could feel their mother's heartbreak, but was at a loss
on how to make it right. Their own sadness lulls them to sleep,
but once in dreamland they concoct the most wonderful scheme.
Mom wakes to the sun’s rays shining through the cracks
of each blind. She feels a little jolt, but swallows her pride
as the memory of their fight fills the emptiness on his side.
With each step, she forces cheerfulness meant to quite any fears
in her children’s minds. Their quiet smiles give way to hope
of a better time—remembrance of a happier valentine.
Mom arrives at the office to find
a dozen red roses with a little note,
"I love you. Please meet me
at our favorite place."
Dad arrives at the office to find
a big, brown teddy bear with a little note,
"I love you. Please meet me
at our favorite place."
Mom and Dad sit quietly side by side waiting patiently
for the children to arrive. First one little head peaks
around the corner, then blonde locks of another can be seen
as the children nervously survey this final scene. The children
gaze intently with their bright blue eyes at Mom and Dad—
unconditionally loving as only children can.
