About Me
BIOGRAPHY
winter dust is not actually snow, as you may understand...or at least, not only.winter dust is something that deals with all five senses. the smell of cold air, the taste of snow, the white landscapes, the whispers of wind and running leaves, the creeps on your skin. winter is not only a season. weather has always played a great part in inspiring songs, lyrics, riffs, sounds, creating a peculiar, dark and cold approach to music.
winter dust's origins can be traced back to first syntoms of dark punk influence in "kerplunk", a band which included the first core of winter dust: marco vezzaro (vezz, vocals and guitar) and marco belloni (guitar), who found a perfect background in andrea perissinotti (bass and back-vocals). the band was mainly influenced by afi, rancid and the offspring, and was able to produce an e.p. in summer 2003. "follow me" was never distributed, and once again abandoned by the drummer, the band broke up immediately after. the three kids never lost contacts anyway, and never gave up composing. the occasion for refoundation was offered by another breaking up during the same summer. "no art", a grunge band led by paolo bandini, unable to find a singer and to replace their bass player. paolo's influences fitted well kerplunk's attitude, so marco, marco and andrea, adopting the more appealing and suitable name of "winter dust", inspired by an afi song ("a winter's tale), took paolo as a guitar player and simone coppiello as drummer, while vezz concentrated on vocals.
"the alchemy between us was astonishing" - remembers vezz, -as we composed with no brakes, and never wasted time". by ten months, the band recorded its first full lenght in summer 2004, titled "delicate". this title was dued to a contrast and a similitude at the same time. delicate and soft lyrics on a quite violent musical background, which anyway owed much to afi, misfits, the offspring and some post-hc bands. the piano inserts on the cd are prelude to the direction the band is going to take. the purpose is to create something new, something to unite violence, sex and a sort of labor limae. some arguments in the band, paradoxically will help this change. after conluding the album, some differences with simone begin to get hard. during 2004, a golden year for the band, winter dust had inserted in the scene with a bunch of successful concerts animated by breathless exhibitions. there was no pause between the songs...no speechs, no stops, just music.
and, little by little, on the fan line was appearing a tall and curly-heard boy, who seemed quite interested to us. leonardo rossi, many times told marco vezzaro, as they became friends, that winter dust was exactly the band he desired to play in. so after the last and awful concert with simone, which showed the deep fracture between him and the rest of the band, leonardo rossi became new winter dust's drummer. by that moment the composition of new material started, slow and painful. 2005 was a hard year for winter dust, and this pain is reflected in the lyrics and in the more complex and violent structure of the songs they were composing. new influences, anyway, played an important role: emo-violence, metal core, indie rock, carved a strong mark in "our dresses on the floor". the band took those influences, reinterpreting them with a personal approach: a classical piano (played by marco, as like as guitar) and the add of a third guitar (the return of vezz as a player, and not only a singer) give a more elaborated approach to saddest landscape-like parts, la quiete, converge, mewithoutYou, the cure, and many other influences.
"it's a big problem when we have to define our genre when we must put it in a flyer" - the band says - "because dark punk would be too little, but we can't define ouselves a screamo band, or emoviolence or whatever else".
vezz says about his lyrics "little by little, i replaced prose with verses, because i fit more in fluent words, and i'm strongly influenced by novelists as Joyce...prose better express the concepts i feel in my mind, as stream of consciuosness' technique does". traces of english literature are evident in "fearful symmetry", a song which features William Blake's poem "The Tiger". and there's also a project of writing a song around "break, break, break" by alfred, lord tennyson. the most sensible listeners can notice an evolution in vezz's singing: screams or melodic parts does not follow a precise, defined and pre-established structure, but they're parallel to emotions that the lyric wants to express. voice becomes a sort of dramatisation of the prose.
by the way, piano is the protagonist of the cd, suiting well also when guitars scream and cry.
recently, winter dust are helped by krizia, their spiritual mother, their fac-totum, their manager, using an ugly term. the band is not afraid to state that they would not be what they are without her help. but she's mainly a fan, a girl who identified in our music, a result which worths 1000 4th places in Emergenza festival.
