About Me

Sixties Cultures? Yes, I do this. Keeps me off the streets. I just have a short attention span and I like some specific stuff:According the cognocenti (Stateside), I'm a credible Northern Soul DJ. Long time friends think of me as someone who collects fairly obscure Reggae/Ska, Soul, Garage/Beat & some assorted other 1950's thru 1970's 45 RPM records.I'm soul-mad, but I do still like yer ole Trojan stylee reggae. My favorite record of this ilk is Eric Donaldson's Never Get Away on the Punch "subsidiary". No, I can't tell you off hand what subsid belongs to Pama vs. Trojan Records with 100% accuracy. I have the happy problem of having mostly experienced the best of it whilst on some dancefloor somewhere - so I wasn't taking notes.I can get heavily into Psych or "Freakbeat" at times. Give me some Hammond Grooves and Jazz meets R&B vibes here and there. Some funk, also. And I do like that Northern-meets-Disco stuff also - a lot! Fave punk band of all time is Sham 69. I've grown to appreciate Cocksparrer, over the last 20 years or so - having used to think they sounded "too metal". Slade are great, if that is not too sort/suedehead chiche. Britpop? I can't say anything bad about it because most of the 90's for me were one happy blur - so to speak. Well, let's say mid 90's and beyond, since I was somewhat of an Art Nerd while still at Purchase. And seeing as I graduated after just four years there...Anything kitsch that has not yet gone big time as a hot retro thing. By default, I like astro-turfed front porches, white metal outdoor furniture, and various things in questionable taste. I used to like that there mod-minimalist thing, before it became (sadly) the new preserve of the semi-mainstream urban neo-hepcats.I obsess over anything abandoned now or in decline, where people used to have a great deal of fun and the old laughter hangs around like a weird ghost.Examples: Asbury Park. Battersea Park (e.g. faded traces of the Festival of Britain). Abandoned stuff featured in Weird New Jersey that doesn't involve institutions for the criminally insane...

My Interests

All yer classic bad boy types.Roadside oddities & abandoned (former) places of amusement.Dressing in different versions of what's pretty much just the same outfit - every time I go out on the town.A sprung wooden dancefloor, some talc & some fast Northern stormers to dance to.Lambrettas.Interesting tatoos. I'd like to meet:

People who dig this kinda sound... Click here for more information about the songs
Click here to create your own MySpace Playlist ... and those who live in/near Upper Darby or Philly or not. Those of you who only gossip constructively & when it's funny. Folks who are obsessed with soul and who don’t mind that my love of same is influenced by my exposure to that “Northern” phenom. Those who travel insanely far distances for a soul night or weekend. Record collectors – even swotty ones. Anyone who’s very keen on mid 20th century housewares/fashions and/or Tiki. At the risk of seeming predictable, I admit to clustering with the like-minded, including 60s scenesters when at home on the Eastern Seaboard - but indiscriminately when over at a large Northern Soul gathering. Anyone liking any kind mid-world's-coolest-century music, if you can justify it. People who like said decade (and the early/late part of the following one) – and who believe that expressing it via you personal style is entirely optional. Sorts and Suedeheads, with a little room for bovvers in butcher coats. “Shirt-spotters” wearing nice suits and having cropped hair - or not. Traditional-gear-wearing soulies, no matter how extreme your look. Scooterists with fairly nice manners. On that note, artsy people who have sound ideas and musicians who don’t posess a ‘tude. Also, pretty much any poets/writers/performance artists who found me, somehow. Above all else, people who have a good path in life, and those who are genuinely decent (but not displaying the “Walk on me” billboard).
