"Erebus" Reviews:
"THESE RIFFS ARE THICKER THAN TONY IOMMI'S MOUSTACHE!"
-- Superhero Artist Management
"Grievous is a band that holds no struggles with representing, demonstrating and inflicting the very essence of it's title amongst their listeners. Upon review of their latest 'Erebus', I found myself trapped in dark thoughts, despair and hopelessness from start to finish. Grievous, in my opinion, have an ever present talent through narration, music and vocals, of raising the question in the listeners mind Do we not reap what we sow?. It's almost impossible to walk away from these 5 tracks without a sense of guilt, honestly believing our fate will become our own. The entire band demonstrates a tight professional unity, with a strong emphasis on a somewhat filthy down-tuned mood and feel. The sound quality and production is far from lacking throughout all five tracks. Aaron's vocals are strong, brilliant, consistently angry, a must for any band of this caliber. Grievous have the power of holding their listeners attention, not only through the incredible sense of dread they produce musically, but also through the intensity of the tales they unfold before us. A Voyage Disrupted is the absolute masterpiece of the entire album, followed closely by Mauling Towers Dry. An epic tale of mayhem and destruction from start to finish - sheer terror, global horror... make way for the apocalyptic doom known as Grievous!"

"They say that 'art reflects life', but what about when art captures life? The new Grievous CD, 'Erebus' presents songs that are each slices of what it feels like to be alive in a world that glistens on the surface, but seethes and boils underneath... a world which appears perfect and pristine, but secretly writhes in agony, dirty, unclean. Lyrically, these songs reflect life in the modern day. There is no solace to be found here: Grievous offers the world as you don't want to see it, as the parts of yourself and your surroundings that you wish you could forget. The music is dark and dirty and unforgiving, and the mood created the same."

"The dawn of these new Grievous tracks bring revelation, indeed, to the inflated, diseased ego. Pulsing, pounding, annihilating, attacking with honesty; fully prepared to rip and render any false holiness limp, helpless, begging for mercy in the face of the one with eyes of pure blackness and complete knowledge. One must be fully prepared to seek AND see the(ir) own truth(s) here. These sounds lurk to humble those with even the grittiest of counterfeit character. Righteousness prevails, pretentiousness be damned. Within the skin of the monster that is 'Erebus', the code is simple: MOOD=DOOM."

"Eerie, disturbing and heavy unlike the mere cookie cutter stomp and growl clutter too common today. Grievous stand out in a genre they continue to redefine. The new Grievous tracks drive like a 62 Chrysler 500 with 6 holes in the muffler, doing 45 on a dusty desert road. Sometimes, they may slow to pick up a lonely hitch hiker, then like in a horror movie... all hell breaks loose!"

"Grievous plays chug-a-holic, anti social and disconcerting doom. Dark, down-tuned, blues-driven riffs with vocals that emit like curdling caustic fumes from the forgotten bogs of the dark lands. The subject matter of 'Erebus' is mostly a reflection of a frightened america with samples, clips, apocalyptic drones, undertones and musings. The overall sense that this is not just a doom metal album, but the soundtrack to the "end of days" is more than inherent. Musically depressing, with not a lot to make you feel good about life, or get you motivated. Personally, I assumed this album would sound much like the fantastic three song CDep, One breath from Winter (the first Grievous cd). I was very surprised to hear the level of departure and growth, especially in songs like Mauling Towers Dry which fuses said doom with a black metal mentality... with the slowest blast beats I've ever heard. A great album... file it next to Hellhammer, Yob and Burning Witch."

"One Breath from Winter" Reviews:
"This is a 3 song EP released in 2004 on Worm Fodder. How this has stayed so underground I'm not sure... Grievous should be a household name within the sludge/doom community. This wouldn't be so much of an enigma if the band had no talent to back it up, but they do, oh they do. This is dark and heavy all around with good production, interesting and hard hitting songs, and cool artwork. Heavy chugging, post-hardcore romp through the swamp. Like a sludgier version of Cult of Luna, the music sets both an epic atmosphere and a layer of filth to bury you under. Loads of hardcore bellowing and screaming and a groove to keep you lurching. Then comes the crawling, slow tempo with the infamous double bass roll. After you're done being smashed into nothing, with its own style and the omnipresent torn throat vocals... this (Grievous) is just a good solid molasses soaked slab of heavy, dark and slow."

" One Breath from Winter is slow, heavy and painful... like a steamroller over children."
"The three songs on this EP have the viscous qualities of sludge and the ambience of doom, but the band knows how to bust out a classic metal riff. 'One Breath from Winter' has a doomy vibe, sludges speed, and metal trappings. Its a winning combination. If you like Weedeater, Jumbos Killcrane, Ufomammut, or Buried at Sea, youll probably dig Grievous."

"Grievous's songs may last the length of your typical rock track, but their sludgy turbulence is so oppressive that their grip on your core lasts twice as long. Songs are as dense as overgrown swamp land, with the riffs low-hanging and the vocals scraping gravel as they growl and gurgle along. Drum hits flap through songs like gigantic bat wings and melodies clang like bells for the dead and the doomed. Not for the light of heart or spirit, Grievous channel nefarious alien life forms on their One Breath from Winter EP-including a bit of William S. Burroughs, whose sampled vocals add an extra eerie edge."

"This is with out a doubt my favorite new band... fantastic doom, with deep throbbing bass and wahed out chugaholic stoner guitar, deep echoing drums and insanely sick vocals... every curdling scream. Starting slow and, taking me, the listener on a great journey... this is something you can listen to over and over again without impotence. I would equate One Breath from Winter to being lost in some foreboding north western woods, in mid winter... this album is fucking four stars!"
