There came a time when a bold demon came before Shiva, after the demon had dispatched the ruling gods of the world, and demanded Lord Shiva hand over his goddess, Parvati. Shiva opened his third eye, striking the earth with a lightning bolt, and Poof!, there was a second demon, quite larger than the first. This second demon was a great, terrible, lean thing with the head of a lion, hair waving to the four quarters of the earth, and his nature was sheer hunger. He had solely been brought into being to eat the first. Now the first demon, not feeling so brazen, wondered what to do, and made the fortunate decision to throw himself at the mercy of Lord Shiva.When you throw yourself upon a gods mercy, the god cannot refuse to protect you. Ever. Even if you are a demon. Now Shiva had a dilemma: what to do with the awful, lionlike demon who had been created for the sole purpose of eating the first. Sheer hunger, how would Shiva subdue it without food.In anguish, the second demon asked, Whom, then, do I now eat?And Shiva replied, Well, um, lets see: Why not eat yourself?With that, beginning with its feet, the great demon with the head and hunger of a lean lion, began to eat away itself, until all that remained was its face. Shiva was enchanted, enthralled and quite pleased, because now, before Shivas eyes, was an image of the monstrous thing that is life itself, which lives and feeds on itself. To the sunlike mask of the lionshead, which was all that remained, and its image of hunger....Shiva said, I shall call you Face Of Glory, Kirttimukha, and you shall shine above the doors to all my temples. No one who refuses to honor and worship you, will ever come (inside) to the knowledge of me............i am hunger...that is who i am......and always remember Scott McLain Lewman...r.i.p.
