Born in Lisbon, Filipe Melo started to play the piano at the age of 14. He soon became interested in jazz and improvisation. He has, since then, dedicated his life to music and films, having played in many jazz festivals and clubs with most portuguese jazz musicians. A student of the Hotclub school (Portugal) and Berklee College of Music (Boston). Winner the Jazzportugal Prize for new talent and the Villas Boas award.
He is also a jazz educator and arranger, having worked with such different musicians / ensembles such as Donald Harrison Jr, Pedro Moreira, Perico Sambeat, Herb Geller, Hal Singer, Bernardo Moreira, Bruno Santos, Marta Hugon, Joana Machado, Lena D..Agua, Laurent Filipe, Pedro Moreira, Carlos do Carmo, Camané, João Moreira, Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, Orquestra Sinfonietta, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Claus Nymark Big Band, Hot Club Big Band and many others.
His hobby and biggest passion is filmmaking, he founded "O Pato Profissional Lda", a producing company, having directed and produced many projects: "I..ll see you in my dreams", the winner of 12 international awards (Fantasporto, Méliès D..or,etc), considered the first portuguese zombie movie. He also directed a documentary ("O Homem que gostava de Zombies"), videoclips (Moonspell), and a TV miniseries ("Um Mundo Catita").
Filipe is currently teaching piano at the Hotclube Jazz School, Conservatório da Madeira and Alhandra Conservatory and he keeps a busy schedule touring with different groups and preparing new projects in both areas.
