I am not Hip Hop. I am not Hip. What does that mean? I am not cool. I am not everything you want to be. I am just a boy who cannot see such a beautiful art form wasted. Not to say the general public or the rappers themselves are idiotic, but that no matter how well everyone means, what comes out of my radio is still shit. And it happens, and it sucks, and it’s time to move on. Remember ass metal. Crotch tight, teased hair, butt rock. See where I’m going? I do respect the culture, I do respect poetry, but I do not respect anyone who creates shit solely for money. They’ve lost their souls, and lost their art as well. Art is a door into the soul. There is a moment, a moment in any passion, but particularly in art, when you show your soul. When you let loose of your tightly guarded grip on what is in the core of you and bare all. It takes practice and a mind and body that knows where you’re going, and lastly a complete commitment to the moment. That is where the art is, some people write down their souls. Some people act out their souls. Rap should aim to do both, create a poem within musical confinement. But now it’s just repeating words. Art is not talking about how many hoes you’ve slapped when you were on coke. Unless you’ve actually done it. And even then, whether it’s good art or not depends on the performer. The whole scene is just dumb now. We’re smothered by children’s songs about adult topics that are good to dance to. How many lines of rap do you need for a three minute song? Sans the two minute repeating hook, a lot. More than enough room to evoke a feeling, but art needs to do more than that. It needs to evoke thought, a reaction. Good music is music to ponder to. Good music is music to love to, play to, talk to, and sit silently to. Good music is more than just the same three words and good production. Good music is not me, is not anyone. Good music is a point in time when the art captures your soul too.
