Tool formally became a band in 1990 with the meeting of Maynard James Keenan, Paul D'mour, Adam Jones, and Danny Carey.  Tool first recieved recognition for their first ep in 1992, when Opiate hit the shelves.  They borrowed the name for Opiate from a famous speech on religion made by Karl Marx.  THeir first video, "Hush", received little airplay due to the editing that was required to meet FCC standards.  During the year of 1993 Tool released a second CD, Undertow.  Soon after they began touring with Rollins Band, fishbone, and Rage Against the Machine.  Later that year Perry Ferrel hired them to play the mainstage of Lollapalooza.  Withe the release of their 1994 single, Prison Sex, the band began to receive negative publicity when Much Music now know as Fuse called the band into question by deeming the video too graphic and offensive Another incident took place at Scientology's Celebrity's Centre in May 1993:"Tool performed at Scientology's Celebrity's Centre, apparently not knowing that this was the home of the cult. Once they found out, they did not take it nicely. Between songs, Keenan, staring first at the lush grounds paid for by devoted L. Ron followers and then into the eyes of his own audience, bayed into the mic like a sheep looking for his shepherd's gate. 'Baaaaa! Baaaaa!' the singer bleated." (BAM Magazine, November 1994). In September of 1995 Paul D'Amour left the band due to artistic indifferences, and in November he was replaced by Justin Chancellor who was formally a member of Peach, an English band Tool has toured with while in Europe.  Tool released Aenima in October 1996, but once again they had difficulty with getting airplay, this time with their latest single Stinkfist, Mtv shortened the video and renamed it track .. 1 due to the offensive connotation.  Aenima was dedicated to the commedian Bill Hicks, some of his performances are included on both Aenima nad Undertow.  In 1997 Tool had some more problems, this time from their record label, volcano records, who claimed that Tool violated thier contract by seeking other record labels, so the filed suit.  Tool filed a counter suit and stated that Volcano failed to use a renewal option in their contract.  THey finally settled out of court, and Tool will do three more records with the label.  Rumors about them breaking up began to die down once they released Salival in 2000, and then Laterallus in 2001. 2006 Tool came out with a new album called 10,000 days, they are touring the United States as well as Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. They are toured with Isis. Maynard has a side project which just released its first CD, they are called Puscifer.
