About Me

Cliff Notes and Disclaimers about me:
I was born and raised in So Cal. My dog and I live in my house out in the hills of Reche Canyon. There are plenty of wild donkeys, coyotes, bobcats, rattlesnakes and brushfires out here and it makes for some interesting hikes. Getting mauled, invenomated or trampled is a distinct possibility.
I straddle the fence between being a city and country boy with the edge going to country, so living out here is perfect for me.
I’m a travel junkie. I always want to visit new places to see how different or the same things are around the country and world.
I gravitate towards adventure, challenge and diversity. I climb mountains, backcountry backpack, and hike the path less followed. Volcanoes, white water rafting and more skydiving are in my near future. I would rather take a trail than the highway, a kayak over a jet ski, a lake over a pool.
I get bored easily but can find pleasure in the simple things. Time I enjoy wasting is not wasted time.
I am convinced I am the protagonist and antagonist in my own life story. That which nourishes me may also destroy me. I like doing things that are as challenging as they are potentially dangerous.
I have eclectic interests that just don't seem like they should (and sometimes don't) live in harmony.
My personality is a blend of sharp contrasts that plays tug-of-war with itself.
I am different things to different people but I am always unabashedly me. That person tends to be a good guy wrapped in a thin bad boy wrapper. I have a warped sense of humor and my brain to mouth filter is often faulty. It is probably my greatest asset and biggest liability. Some people interpret this as a form of mild social retardation. I call it being a sarcastic smart ass. A convincing case could be made for either side.
I like people for their flaws as much as I do for their strengths and I'm far more interested in why people do the things they do rather than what they actually do.
Plenty more random factoids about me. Insert your quarter and ask away.

My Interests

camping like I'm homeless, hiking with my dog,
running to clear my mind when I'm stressed,
backpacking in the middle of nowhere 'til my body aches and my feet blister,
motorcycle rides on open roads,
activities that risk bodily injury,
strolling Venice Beach,
getting stamps in my passport,
home improvement projects,
road trips on a whim,
horseback riding,
not having to wear a watch or worry about being on time,
laughing 'til my eyes water and my ribs hurt,
observing and participating in behavioral plasticity,
being crafty,
causing mischief,
setting a bad example for those who don't know any better,
skinny-dipping,
sleeping under the stars,
clear skies and strong telescopes,
museums,
sitting on my porch swing in the rain,
novelty in all forms,
chaos and debauchery in VEGAS,
R & R in Lone Pine,
BBQs,
catching up with friends,
random cocktails,
the Flamingo, the Falconer, Sevilla,
wine tasting, good sushi,
alcohol: The cause of and solution to all of life's problems,
hot tubs on cold nights,
text message assaults on a slow day,
tattoos and the women that sport them,
shooting ranges,
sarcastic and quirky people,
scheming to stay one step ahead my enemies,
finding the loopholes and elasticity of rules,
turbulent airplane rides,
serendipitous discoveries,
the occasional weekend lethargy binge.
I think some those belong in my "Vices" section, but I couldn't find it.

I'd like to meet:

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
Other backpackers/travelers/adventurers would be really cool.
People that can make me laugh and hold an intelligent conversation
The "glass half full" type.
Sinners and Saints.
People like or unlike myself that can offer new and different perspectives.
Failing that, I'm game for meeting the wicked, tainted, cynical and corruptible. There's always some mad, crazy fun going on in that crowd.

Music:

I span the spectrum from pop, rock, rap, punk, industrial, metal, blues, jazz, folk. Some country is ok.
Newest favorite - Gym Class Heros
Stuff that gets heavy rotation:
2Pac, Aerosmith, Amy Winehouse, Ani DiFranco, Bad Religion, The Beatles Bloodhound Gang, Cake, Christina Aguilera, Eminem, Fiona Apple, Garbage, Grateful Dead, Jack Johnson, John Lennon, Kanye West, Kid Rock, Lords of Acid, Marilyn Manson, NIN, Paul Simon, Pink Floyd, Portishead, Public Enemy, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Chili Peppers, Richard Cheese & Lounge Against the Machine, Steve Miller, Sublime, Tool, U2

Movies:

I like dark comedies, film noir; Movies that challenge or push the envelope of social norms and gives me something to think about.
My favorites:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Fight Club, Batman Begins, Boondock Saints, The Crow, Cruel Intentions, Dr. Strangelove, Garden State, Good Will Hunting, Legends of the all, Man on the Moon, Memento, Monty Python, MST3K, Napoleon Dynamite, Nightmare before Christmas, Office Space, Payback, Philadelphia Story, Requiem for a Dream, Reservoir Dogs, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Salton Sea, A Scanner Darkly, Secondhand Lions, Secretary, Snatch, Silence of Lambs, Stranger than Fiction, The Tao of Steve, Training Day, The Usual Suspects, Wedding Crashers, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Will Ferrell movies, Your Friends & Neighbors

Television:

TV is my cathode ray nipple that pacifies me when I'm too lazy to find something better to do... and this from the man that used to be involved in television production.
Grey's Anatomy, The Simpsons, Futurama, Law & Order, Nova, Most stuff on the Discovery Channel, Man vs. Wild, Seconds from Disaster, Modern Marvels, My Name is Earl, The Daily Show, Colbert Report. I'll even occasionally stop flipping through the channels to watch a Star Trek episode. Just to offset the nerd factor from that, I balance that by watching Sex and the City or 24.
I'm a night owl, so I tend to catch a lot of Conan O'Brien and SNL.
My dog probably watches more TV than I do, but she only watches Animal Planet.

Books:

You can't judge a book by it's movie. I don't read as much as I'd like to.
A man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them. -Mark Twain
Catch 22, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, The Darwin Awards, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "Trilogy", books about physics or abnormal psychology
Angels and Demons - Dan Brown,
Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown,
The Art of Deception - Kevin Mitnick,
The Elegant Universe - Brian Greene,
Before the Beginning - Martin Rees,
The Code Book - Simon Singh,
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson
The Big Book of Tell me Why - Arkady Leokum - It's a kids book, but it's still great.
Anything by Robert Fulghum

Heroes:

People that make the world a better place.
Those that do what others say is impossible.

Oh yeah... Jack Bauer and Bear Grylls
