Born as the son of a Jazz saxophonist, Marcus Rentie (a.k.a. FrayedKnot) grew up in a very music oriented atmosphere. Learning piano at a young age contributed to his ability to read and later write music. At age 9 he played the snare drum in the school band and later Bass drum and Quads in drum & bugle core. In High School he played drums in the school Jazz band and various punk bands before finding his true instrument of choice, the turntable. When a pair of busted belt-drive turntables were graciously dropped in his lap, his first records were battle breaks. After watching an Invisible Skratch Piklilz video he dedicated his life to learning the art of turntablism. Around this time, like many of his open-minded punk rock/hip hop counterparts, Marcus began to go to raves. And just like many of his counterparts, he was sucked into the world of Drum & Bass. Perplexed by the complexity in the drum programming, Marcus then picked up another musical obsession, DnB.
After years of scratching, mixing and juggling on belt-driven tables, then attaining Technics1200s, he started entering DJ battles. As his record collection grew so did his love for DnB. Torn between the hip hop nature of turntablism and the thrill of dropping bass lines, there was only one thing to do. He is now incorporating the two into what he calls Jungleturntablism.
Now frequenting stages across southern Cali, his highly developed table skills are progressively gaining him a following. Currently a skratch instructor at the Groovriders DJ School he continues to sharpen his skills while teaching the art to DJs from beginners to veterans. At this time Marcus is a senior at Cal State Northridge studying Electrical Engineering. Here is where he plans to make many contributions to the advancement of music technology.
