Old friends & new friends... Singers, dancers, esp Asian/Asian-American talents. It seems like there aren't enough Asian/Asian-Americans represented in the music/entertainment industry. Asians are bombarded by a lot of outside influences, esp if they grew up here. It really bothers me when people say stuff like, "Oh, there's so many Asians who sing in English and you can't tell if they're Asian if you listen to their music closing your eyes. It makes no sense to me, because they're music doesn't represent anything Asian in them. (Blahblahblah) They're not representing who they really are." or... "What's so Asian about them?"
What??!?What do they mean by, "they don't sound Asian"... Did he expect some kind of traditional Asian instrument to feel it's Asian music?? It's not like Asians have to sing about how immigrant-like they are? or how heavy their accents are? yu dum gai... If they like to rap, let them rap. If they want to sing Rock, let them rock. If you pay attention to their lyrics and their styles, you'll probably see how different each of them are, and that they don't just "blend in" with mainstream music and eventually fade away. Do Caucasians sing about how "White" they are?? What is he trying to say? I don't need to hear anybody telling me "Asian Americans are blahblahblah", "But I thought Asians are blahblahblah." Enough already. We need to support each other if we want to be heard.
It's okay to be different. Just be who you are.
Not all Asians speak another language besides English, and it bothers me when non-Asians are surprised when they find out that English is the only language you speak. Do all Caucasians speak French, Italian, etc? AND English? I don't think so... The longer your family has stayed in the U.S, the harder it is to be connected to your "home" country. So I don't expect anybody who grew up here to be bilingual. It's good enough if they're proud to be Asian.
Okay, I'm drifting off topic *sigh*.... I meant to say, I want to show my support for the Asian/Asian-American community in any way I can within my boundaries. For different people, there's different reaction. Be sure to visit some of my friends pages. I feel very grateful to have had an opportunity to work with such talented people who are passionate, devoted, and has a purpose. Please feel free to visit their page and listen to their tunes. Sometimes a simple email means a lot. At least that's how it is with me. When I work on events and see that all of the hard work people have put in has finally come together, or when I get a nice thank you card, it's all worth it.
