A minor classic in it’s attempt to combine a substantial number of more or less unmergeable genres, Modesty, on their now forgotten and rare 1989 release Pieces Of Modesty (CBS Records) produced by Stephen Stewart-Short (Chaka Kahn) and Jeremy Allom (Massive Attack), somehow managed to create a piece of work that was, on the one hand, very much part of what musically defined the late 1980’s, and yet at the same time, something extremely far removed from it. Here one finds traces of West Coast AOR, New Wave, Progressive Rock, 80’s Soul and Synth Pop, all coexisting on this strangely enigmatic album. Finding a copy of it may today be as challenging as the work itself.
