Approximately 2.8 million students will graduate from United States High Schools this year. Some of them will go on to college, join the military, or take another path in life, eventually becoming active members of society, all equally American. However, in this sea of individuals, a group of approximately 60,000 will not have this opportunity, not because they lack motivation, but because of the status passed on to them by their parents. These often highly achieved individuals cannot attend college, enlist in the armed forces, or otherwise live a full life. Children that grew up on American soil, respect the laws of this country, and want nothing more than to be recognized for what they are, Americans, bear an inherited title of an “illegal immigrant”.

Current Status

On October 24 2007, a 52-44 Senate majority voted in favor of debating the DREAM Act, but fell short of the required 60 votes to motion for cloture. For now, the DREAM continues to elude thousands of students, but may come up for debate again in 2008 2009. The Dream Act version in the House has 84 co-sponsors and still is an active legislation.

"That's not fair, you broke the law, why do you deserve in-state tuition?"

These young men and women have not broken any laws. Their status is passed down from the immigration laws that were broken by guardians (in which they had no say). They should not have to pay for the mistakes of others. As for the In-State tuition- IT HAS BEEN COMPLETELY REMOVED FROM THE BILL! It's strictly the states authority to decide if one is eligible for for in-state tuition."here have been a number of false claims made regarding other provisions of this bill. For example, some have claimed that it would provide illegal aliens with free college tuition. This is simply not the case. The bill simply provides for a conditional change in status. It does not create any new tuition or financial aid programs. The only forms of government assistance that would be available to individuals under this bill are those that are currently available to all students in the United States. Others have claimed that the bill would change the status of the students’ parents and family. This claim is also false. Under the bill, only the individual applicants would be eligible for a change in status. Finally, some have claimed that the bill provides amnesty for many current and future illegal immigrants, providing more incentives for people to enter the country illegally. However, the bill only applies to a narrow class of immigrants who were minors at the time they entered the country. And, once again, only those who have been present in the country for five years prior to the enactment of the bill would be eligible, making any future illegal immigrants ineligible for participation in the program.
