DJ / VANDAL
Straight out the camps of Digital Konfusion and Beyond This World comes the double-edge talent of Serge aka “dj/vandal.†The darkside king from Queens was introduced to NYC nightlife in his early days as an underground artist. His love for beats and samples, as well as painting, didn’t take long to manifest as a lifestyle labeled hiphop. Determined to live a positive/creative path through the four elements of hiphop, Serge (dj/vandal) established his presence in NYC urban culture . As a purveyor of underground sound, as well as contributing force in the early days of nocturnal audio sensory awareness, Serge was exposed to a unique experience in the early formation of today’s “scene.â€
Having been born in Odessa, USSR and raised in New York City led to influences from the entire musical spectrum. HipHop/Dancehall and Electro/New Wave led to House (the deeper the betta) and Freestyle, followed by Hardcore and Breaks respectively, combined with the everpresent classical/jazz varieties, ultimately crashing straight into what is now DrumNBass/Jungle. This journey through genres was an important influence in the creation of dj/vandal’s musical psyche. Although known for bringing the darkside to the dancefloor, he carries you on a ride through a mosaic of styles designed to showcase the entire musical genre he specializes in.
New York was the birthplace not only of hiphop, but of graffiti art as well. At an early age, Serge was exposed to the art on the trains, which soon translated to blackbooks and walls. He began to explore everything from ink to photoshop and came up with a personal style marked by trademark multi-medium pieces. Dj/vandal is an Art Director by occupation, and freelance graphic designer affiliated with Digital Konfusion, Inc., likewise continuing to pursue art projects with the Beyond This World team.
Dj/Vandal has become a local favorite on the jungle circuit through appearances at such staple parties as Physics, KonkreteJungle, DirectDrive, Camouflage, TestpressSundays, and Recess, as well as Digital Konfusion’s annual Defyin’ The Tribes uptown outlaw party. Together with Dj Odi (also of Digital Konfusion) he hosts of the monthly StrategicSessions @ Konkrete Jungle, as well as co-hosts of nycjungle.com's Hijack Radio, and the Digital Konfusion Mixshow USA. Along with making regular dates up and down the east coast, he has branched out internationally completing an Austrian 8 city tour to bring in 2003. His art career is equally prolific and on the rise through his cross-platform popularity. This fusion of a common vibe between art and music has culminated in canvases, tape/vinyl covers, flyers, and logos, in addition to production work and mix compilations, all under the same guise : dj/vandal.
